Hardback. Zustand: Good. One of the founders of the Impressionist movement while also one of its most ruthless critics, too bohemian for the bourgeois and too bourgeois for the artists, Edgar Degas was a man of paradoxes. A loner, he only loved one woman without ever courting her, the American painter Mary Cassatt whom we follow closely as well. And it is in the company of the latter that at the twilight of his life, Efa and Rubio open the pages of Degas's notebooks to try to unravel the mystery of this genius steeped in contradictions.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. What Degas Saw looks at the world through a beloved artist's eyes and provides insight into his creative process. Walking through the streets of Paris with cape and cane, the French artist Edgar Degas observes the world around him, finding inspiration at every turn. From the blurry faces of passersby glimpsed through a bus window to the sundappled landscape seen from a moving train, from the hunched profiles of laundresses at work to light-bathed ballerinas on the opera house stage, the artist - with open eyes and a curious mind - collects impressions of the people and places he sees. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Never before translated into English, the text's original publication in Mercure de France in 1919, shortly after the artist's death, has been treated as an important account of the master sculptor at work. We know that Alice was writing under a pseudonym, but who the real person behind this account was remains a mystery - to this day nothing is known about her. Yet, the descriptions seem too accurate to be ignored, the anecdotes too spot - on to discount; even the dialogue captures the artist's tone and mannerisms. What is found in these pages is at times a woman's flirtatious recollection of a bizarre "artistic type" and at others a moving attempt to connect with a great, often tragic man. The descriptions are l impid, unburdened; the dialogue is lively and intimate, not unlike reading the very best kind of gossip, with world - historical significance. Here in these dusty studios, Degas is alive, running hands over clay, complaining about his eyes, denigrating the o ther artists around him, and whispering salaciously to his model. And during his mood swings, we see reflected the model's innocence and confusion, her pain at being misunderstood and finally rejected. It is an intimate portrait of a moment in a great arti st's life, a sort of Bildungsroman in which his model (whoever she may be) does not emerge unscatheded.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. This absorbing, heartfelt work tells the story of the real dancer behind Degas's now-iconic sculpture, and the struggles of late nineteenth-century bohemian life of Paris. Drawing on a wealth of historical material as well as her own love of ballet and personal experience of loss, Camille Laurens presents a compelling, compassionate portrait of Marie van Goethem. Laurens also looks further, at the world of the artists' models themselves, traditionally overlooked in the history of art.…
