An expansion upon his well-known Bedford Cycle of Celestial Objects, which garnered a gold medal from the Royal Astronomical Society, Sidereal Chromatics provides both a theory concerning the source of double-star colours and a method for determining their most exact description. Detailed charts compare Smyth's measurements of more than one hundred double stars with his own previously published observations and those of his fellow astronomer, Father Benedetto Sestini. This edition also includes Smyth's famous colour chart, an attempt to standardise the process of identifying double-star colours. Sidereal Chromatics ends with Smyth's plea to amateur astronomers to continue the effort of charting the heavens, aided by improved telescopes and works such as his, 'trustworthy treatises available to all men'.…

PRESENTATION COPY to the Library of the Chronological Institute of London "with respects of Admiral Smyth & Dr. Lee, Hartwell. 25 February. 1865" With the engraved armorial bookplates of Smyth and of Lee (John Lee is the dedicatee). A bit of wear and subtle stains to cloth, minor binding repairs, lightly evenly browned; a good to very good copy. "Back in 1863, when Huggins and Miller were examining the spectra of stars, Smyth was preparing to publish a monograph on the science of star colour (the present book). He asked several seasoned observers, including Huggins, to examine binary pairs of contrasting colour and give their expert opinion on them." (B.J. Contemporary maroon half morocco, gilt (extremities worn with minor loss). Provenance: with the bookplate of William H. Pulsifer on the front paste-down. First edition. Smyth, a naval officer and surveyor, one of the founders of the RGS, he was the author of many volumes, including an earlier astronomical work "The Cycle of Celestial Objects for the Use of Naval, Military, and Private Astronomers" (1844), for which he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society, and "Aedes Hartwellianae" in 1851. The astronomical observatory at Hartwell described in great detail in this book was built between 1830 and 1839 by John Lee (who also funded the printing of this volume) to Smyth's specifications. …
