Spine lightly faded, a duller red than the covers. Light fading also present along edges. White staining on front cover: inch long patch above title, several small splotches on right side of title, two small dots along front hinge. Corners, crown and foot of spine bumped. Crown of spine beginning to fray slightly. None of the embellishments or lettering are chipped or obscured. Title page dated 1884, no separate copyright page. This book was originally published in 1880, but as of this listing, only 4 copies published in 1893 or later are available on ABE. xiv + 371 pages, followed by several pages advertising other books in the International Scientific Series. Features 82 woodcut illustrations throughout the text. Stamp reading "Universalist National Memorial Church" at top of front attached endpaper. Pages lightly and evenly toned, otherwise clean. Woodcuts are unmarred. Binding loosening at crown and foot of spine, along front and back hinges, but uncracked. No loose pages of visible detachment of spine and pages. Pages have toned, with some foxing. Invoice from a British natural history bookseller to C.W. Hart Jr., curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and author of a reference work on crawfish, is tucked inside the front cover. 82 black-and-white illustrations.
