hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Publication: London, F. & J. Rivington (alongside co-publishers in Exeter and Plymouth), 1848. Printed in Plymouth by Roger Lidstone. Formatting: 8vo. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. Condition Report: Very Good. The original ribbed cloth binding remains square and surprisingly tight, showing only light rubbing to the extremities and slight sun-fading along the spine. The blind-stamped borders and central cross remain sharp, while the gilt spine lettering is unoxidised and remarkably bright. Internally, the pages exhibit some age-toning and mild, scattered foxing, which is slightly heavier on the preliminary leaves and the frontispiece engraving. A contemporary collection signature ("Stokes coll. 1848") is present on the front endpaper. The text block is otherwise clean and free of significant blemish, with the hinges completely sound. Catalogue Note: This is the first edition of Reverend William Isaac Coppard's account, featuring simultaneous publication in London, Exeter, and Plymouth. The book retains its original publisher's binding, denoted by the printer's gilt stamp ("Lidstone Plymouth") at the tail of the spine. It includes a detailed frontispiece engraving of Plympton St. Mary Church. This true 1848 printing is exceptionally scarce on the open market, with surviving copies largely confined to institutional holdings rather than retail circulation. The volume bears an early provenance note assigning it to the "Stokes coll." dated the year of publication. First published in 1848, Cottage Scenes During the Cholera offers a harrowing, first-hand account of the 1832 cholera epidemic as it ravaged the rural parish of Plympton St. Mary in Devonshire. Drawn directly from the diary entries of Reverend William Isaac Coppard, the text chronicles the brutal physical toll of the disease and the profound grief of the afflicted community. Coppard's daily records capture the immediate fear and resilience of nineteenth-century rural society facing an unstoppable contagion. Today, the work stands as a vital primary source for historians of medicine, public health, and provincial Victorian life. N/A (illustrator).…
