Until his death in 1965 Le Corbusier dominated architecture as Picasso did painting. He adopted several pseudonyms and wrote passionately and prolifically, assaulting not only the academic and traditional in architecture but also the evils of modern society. He desired to create order and harmony amid the ugly industrialism of the machine age, yet his Promethean spirit was that of a fighter, not of a peace-maker. Hence his irrationalities and the many contradictory interpretations of his achievement, several of which are discussed in the introduction to this edition. Charles Jencks reviews Le Corbusier's whole career, setting his private life and public image, his theories and his buildings, his paintings and his propaganda, in relation to one another. Ultimately he finds the explanation for the belligerence of this prophet of harmony to be his tragic Nietzschean view of the human condition: conflict - 'burn what you love, love what you burn' - is the key to creation".
