In this letter they attack the famous report from Joseph Bazalgette and his colleagues for both understating the seriousness of the problem of sewage pollution of the Thames and its health impacts, and for a grossly inadequate solution to it. While Bazalgette's scheme was the one that was constructed, and proved successful, Galton and Simpson's letter is probably a more accurate assessment of the scale of the problem.
