Paperback. Zustand: Good. Cop in the Classroom is a memoir about a deputy sheriff's career. The 33 personal stories are organized by chapters in which students ask the officer questions about his job. Is your gun loaded? Have you ever arrested a drunk driver? Have you ever shot anyone? Did you ever have to watch anyone die?You will discover: What character traits are important for being a police officer; what it's like to make arrests and work fatality wrecks; how safe our schools are; the role of a school resource officer (SRO); what SROs do if they suspect child abuse; why sharing lunch and recess builds relationships; and the importance of support systems for youth.Jim Potter has accomplished something I didn't think anyone in law enforcement would do during my lifetime . . . write a 'first class' book about police officers from a totally new and extraordinarily insightful perspective. The stories take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, as they are hilarious, heart-breaking and inspiring.--Neal Trautman, Ph.D., Director, National Institute of EthicsThis book is a unique insight into the special rapport that can develop between a school resource officer and students who seek adult help on a multitude of levels.--Dr. Wynona Winn, Superintendent of Schools, Hutchinson, Kansas.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In the tradition of Leland Gregorya (TM)s STUPID collections, here are authentic tales of life behind the badge, featuring hilarious anecdotes as told by the cops who experienced thema everything from stupid crooks and bungled crimes to station-house banter and quick-witted comebacks. In the tradition of Leland Gregory's best-selling Stupid collections, retired NYPD officer Scott Baker and author Tom Philbin present A Lighter Shade of Blue. With authentic tales of life behind the badge, A Lighter Shade of Blue features hilarious anecdotes as told by the cops on the scene--everything from stupid crooks and bungled crimes to patrol etiquette, station house banter, and mangled English. From a gun-stealing chimpanzee to the good-natured hazing of a new recruit, A Lighter Shade of Blue mixes the hilarious with the downright unbelievable through more than 100 firsthand accounts from police officers across the United States and Canada. In addition, a handy glossary of funny cop lingo apprises readers of why they would much rather have a fat pill (buttered roll) as opposed to a finger wave (rectal exam). Consider A Lighter Shade of Blue as the ultimate ride-along--a sidesplitting collection rife with real stories from the cops who have seen and heard it all, including: * A rookie who is locked in the back of a cop car during his first patrol and driven, windows down, through an automatic car wash. * A gun-stealing chimpanzee. * A college professor attacked by a wild gang of teenage girls who promptly steal his watch.…

Zustand: Very Good. Putting herself in the line of fire is a dangerous way to make a living. But Roberta Meyers is proud of her job with the Lakewood P.D. No one's going to tell the dedicated police officer how to live her life. Including Holden Thomas, who thinks law enforcement is no career for a single mother. Then why is Robbie finding the outspoken youth minister--a single dad himself--so hard to resist? Holden's proud of the shelter he runs for troubled teens, and proud of the niece he's raising single-handedly. He can't let his attraction to Robbie get in the way of creating a stable home for his family. So why is Holden feeling as if he never wants to let her go.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. In September 2000, I was sitting on a bench facing the Mediterranean Sea in the French Riviera town of Nice. I had flown there during a three-day break in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial in Camp Ziest, Netherlands, where I was expected to testify. As I sat on this bench eating lunch, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed by emotion. It was an awakening: I realized that my being there was the fulfillment of one of my many life dreams and goals that were launched thirty-one years earlier from another bench facing the Three Sisters Ponds in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park. Now, from a bench in the French Riviera, I began to chronicle the manifestation of those dreams and goals, accomplished through my thirty-six-year law enforcement career as a Baltimore City policeman and FBI agent. I'm hoping my story catches on with anyone who dares to dream and set challenging and aggressive life goals. I hope to inspire and encourage more interest in law enforcement careers by sharing my professional experiences and the educational, leadership, and career opportunities that were availed to me during my law enforcement career. My responsibilities as a Baltimore City policeman included saving lives, catching murder suspects, confronting wayward police, and dealing with crisis situations such as the 1971 student riots at the University of Maryland and the 1974 Baltimore City Police strike and riots. As an FBI agent, I was a part of the 1981 Brinks armored truck murder/robbery investigation in Nyack, NY; took part in New York FBI SWAT operations; and was involved in international extra-territorial terrorism investigations such as the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, the attempted bombing of then-Secretary of State George Shultz's motorcade in La Paz, Bolivia, and the kidnapping and murders of Americans in Srinagar, India, and Karachi, Pakistan.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country, Reserve Coast Guard Investigative Service Special Agent Michael Grogan received active duty orders and became one of the Coast Guard's first ever sea marshals. Sea marshals were tasked with preventing terrorists from taking positive control of ships and running them into the Golden Gate Bridge, other vessels, a pier, or other target of opportunity.Grogan and his fellow sea marshals realized even crew members could be members of Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda supporters. The ships sea marshals protected consisted of oil tankers; container ships, cruise ships, and bulk carriers. These ships came from all around the world. Grogan transferred military branches and became an Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) special agent serving in several active duty assignments to include Iraq; Afghanistan, and the Pentagon. After twenty-two years of military service, Grogan retired at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3.In his civilian life, at the age of nineteen, Grogan worked as a reserve police officer for the Los Gatos, California, Police Department. At the age of twenty, Grogan spent a thirty-year career with the Millbrae, California, Police Department and retired at the rank of Captain. While at the Millbrae Police Department, Grogan faced two of the greatest tragedies of his life; the murder of a close friend and fellow police officer and the drowning of an infant whom he drove to the hospital, but could not save.…

This book is an extension of that mission.Good Cop, Black Cop is a moving and timely memoir that reveals how racism impacts people on both sides of the thin blue line. His own fight for justice reveals a great deal about race relations in the United States, making it an essential book in these turbulent times.- Robert Alexander, PhD., Director, Institute for Civics and Public Policy at Ohio Northern University; CNN contributorFormer Sgt. Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An urgent warning about the growing threat to our democracy from a twenty-year police veteran and former Trump supporter who nearly lost his life during the insurrection of January 6th. When Michael Fanone self-deployed to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, he had no idea his life was about to change. When he got to the front of the line, he urged his fellow officers to hold it against the growing crowd of insurrectionists--until he found himself pulled into the mob, tased until he had a heart attack, and viciously beaten with a Blue Lives Matter flag as shouts to kill him rang out. Now, Fanone is ready to tell the full story of that fateful day, along with exploring our country's most critical issues as someone who has had firsthand experience with many of them. A self-described redneck who voted for Trump in 2016, Fanone's closest friend was an informant--a Black, transgender, HIV-positive woman who has helped him mature and rethink his methods as a police officer. With his unique insight as an undercover detective and intense desire to do the right thing no matter the cost, Fanone provides a nuanced look into everything from policing to race to politics in a way that is accessible across all party lines. Determined to make sure no one forgets what happened at the Capitol on January 6th, Fanone has written a timely call to action for anyone who wants to preserve our democracy for future generations.…

Hardback. Zustand: Good. Opening with a powerful letter to former Tacoma police chief David Brame, who shot his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself, Norm Stamper introduces us to the violent, secret world of domestic abuse that cops must not only navigate, but which some also perpetrate. Former chief of the Seattle police force, Stamper goes on to expose a troubling culture of racism, sexism, and homophobia that is still pervasive within the twenty-first-century force; then he explores how such prejudices can be addressed. He reveals the dangers and temptations that cops face, describing in gripping detail the split-second life-and-death decisions. Stamper draws on lessons learned to make powerful arguments for drug decriminalization, abolition of the death penalty, and radically revised approaches to prostitution and gun control. He offers penetrating insights into the blue wall of silence, police undercover work, and what it means to kill a man. And, Stamper gives his personal account of the World Trade organization debacle of 1999, when protests he was in charge of controlling turned violent in the streets of Seattle. Breaking Rank reveals Norm Stamper as a brave man, a pioneering public servant whose extraordinary life has been dedicated to the service of his community.…

Corey Pegues] gives us an incisive look at life on both sides of the blue line.a nuanced perspective of the often-fractious relationship between communities of color and law enforcement. --USA TODAY A rollicking, no-holds-barred account of life on the streets, seen from both sides.--Booklist (starred review) During the 1980s, crack cocaine devastated many of America's inner-city communities. Drug dealers seized neighborhoods, terrorizing its inhabitants with brutal violence. Aunts and uncles, next-door neighbors, and best friends became addicts. No longer were playgrounds and parks a safe-haven for kids; the sound of bouncing basketballs by day was replaced by the pop of gunshots by night. Those who lived through the nightmare tell unimaginable stories of that era. Once a Cop is one of the most extraordinary. Raised in Queens, New York, as a teen, Corey Pegues watched drugs uproot his stable, working-class neighborhood almost overnight. When times got tough, he had a choice: continue to watch his family struggle to buy food, to pay bills; or sell dope. He chose the latter, eventually becoming part of the notorious Supreme Team street gang. After a botched murder attempt on a rival gang member, Corey, the only member of his family to graduate from high school, knew he had to get out. Barely eighteen, with two kids by two different women, Corey left under cover of night to enlist in the US Army. After several years in the military, he set his sights on becoming a New York City cop and breezed through the police academy. In this provocative memoir, Corey Pegues tells how a onetime crack dealer became one the highest ranking members of the largest police force in the country, living and working in the nation's most violent neighborhoods. His meteoric rise from patrol officer to deputy inspector covers the administrations of former New York City mayors Rudy Giulliani and Michael Bloomberg, and coincides with the early tenures of famed police commissioners Ray Kelly and William Bill Bratton. Corey grants readers full access to the manner in which some of the NYPD's most controversial policies like Broken Windows and Stop, Question and Frisk were implemented; and an insider's take on the shootings of Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo, the assault on Abner Louima and other tragedies that stained the department. As tensions continue to mount between police and communities of color, Corey tears down the blue wall to discuss the discriminatory practices he faced within the NYPD and talks candidly about the distrust that exists between law enforcement and the citizens they are sworn to protect. What is daily life truly like for urban youth in America? What is the one problem endemic in law enforcement that's even more dangerous than rampant racism? Corey contends that his life on the streets informed his approach to police work, and shows how it made him a more conscientious and compassionate officer. There aren't many people who understand both sides of the story the way he does. Corey doesn't hate the police. He loves the badge. And he believes it's his duty to challenge the culture of racism, silence, and arrogance in the NYPD and police departments across the country.…
