Hardcover. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:- The inscriptions of Coorg, though few in number, are of importance, especially the earlier ones. It is true they tell us little about the Kodagas, or Coorgs, themselves. Nor was this to be expected, for the Coorgs are naturally an unlettered race; their very language having no written characters1; and although the predominant class, they form no more than one-fifth of the population. The earliest express mention of the Kodagas that has been met with in inscriptions is in 1174, in the time of the Hoysala king Vira-Ballala (Hs 20). They are also mentioned in 1722, in the time of Chikka Deva-Raja of Mysore (Sr. 64). But the name Kudakam (Coorg) apparently occurs in Tamil literature so far back as the 2nd century; and the Seven Kombu of Sk 136 may have reference to Coorg in 1068. The earlier inscriptions show that the Jain faith was exclusively the State or court Religion at first. The followed the Saiva and Vaishnava creeds; and lastly the Vira-Saiva or Lingayit form of Saivism. All this while the Coorgs no doubt, as now kept to their own Ancestor and Demon worship. About the Author:- Benjamin Lewis Rice CIE (1837 1927), popularly known as B. L. Rice, was a British historian, archaeologist and educationist. He is known for his pioneering work in deciphering inscriptions, especially in Kannada, and in Sanskrit inscriptions in the Kingdom of Mysore. Rice's researches were published as the voluminous Epigraphia Carnatica which contains translations of about 9000 inscriptions he found in the Old Mysore area. Rice also compiled the much acclaimed Mysore Gazetteer which still remains the primary source of information for most places in Mysore and neighbouring Coorg. Rice served with distinction in the Mysore civil service and as first Director of the Mysore State Archaeology Department. The Title 'Coorg Inscriptions written/authored/edited by B. Lewis Rice', published in the year 2021. The ISBN 9788121222006 is assigned to the Hardcover version of this title. This book has total of pp. 166 (Pages). Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: The book "Mysore and Coorg from the Inscriptions" is a comprehensive exploration of Mysore and Coorg's history, utilizing inscriptions as valuable contemporary records. Major Dixon's early photographic efforts in 1865 captured 150 inscriptions, providing a basis for historical understanding. Lewis, appointed Director of Archaeological Researches in 1884, expanded the study, forming the Archaeological Department in 1890. The meticulous exploration revealed insights into ruling powers, their ancestry, and achievements, filling historical gaps. The book serves as a compendium, summarizing the Epigraphia Carnatica volumes, and is a valuable resource for scholars, shedding light on Karnataka's history, literature, and culture.
