Dezember 1891 in New York; 7. Juni 1980 in Los Angeles) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller und Maler. . Stil: Millers Stil umfasst eine stark naturalistische Schreibweise mit surrealen Visionen und lyrisch gefärbter Prosa. Der Prozess des Schreibens und das Phänomen der Kreativität selbst spielt in Millers Werk eine große Rolle. Fast kann man glauben, dass sein Schreiben eine mitunter verzweifelte, manchmal ausgelassen fröhliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Leben und seinem Weg ist, ein Schriftsteller zu werden. Dabei betont er aber immer den Vorrang des Lebens. Hinter der alle Formen verachtenden Schreibweise offenbart sich bei genauerem Hinsehen die bedingungslose Hingabe an das Leben selbst, das in seinem ungeordneten Nebeneinander von Hohem und Niedrigem, Grausamen und Zärtlichem, Lächerlichem und Anbetungswertem bejaht und vor den Augen des Lesers in seiner ganzen Mannigfaltigkeit und Intensität ausgebreitet wird. In diesem Zusammenhang betrachtet er Kunst und zumal Literatur vor allem auch als Akt der Befreiung von gesellschaftlichen Fesseln, Konventionen und Zwängen. Sein Werk spiegelt, fast ausschließlich in der Form einer Autobiographie oder eines Tagebuchs gehalten, seine mitunter surreale Gefühls- und Gedankenwelt. Millers Schriften sind stark gesellschaftskritisch und psychoanalytisch.
