In den Warenkorb[Detective mystery] This double issue contains the FIRST APPEARANCE of the notorious Homes story 'The Adventure of The Final Problem' by Doyle, illustrated by Sidney Paget, later published as the last story in 'The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes'. Original issue magazine format, approx. 9.5 x 6.5 inches with pictorial covers, frontispiece illustration, illustrated throughout, all advertisement leaves present together with half-yearly general title at rear (to be used when hard-bound in publisher's cloth). Contents clean, small area of nibbling to top corner, chip to foot of spine. A very good copy of the most infamous Conan Doyle story, in a custom-made printed 'Strand' slipcase with card tray. The frontispiece is the legendary 'Death of Sherlock Holmes' plate showing Holmes and Moriarty at the Riechenbach Falls. This is a most controversial Holmes episode in which our hero was killed off by Doyle, desperate to break from the phenomenon he'd created, and particularly keen to write more historical fiction. The disappointment of the public (not to mention the staff at 'The Strand') knew no bounds when the news of Holmes' death became known; the author was subjected to abuse and 'Tit Bits' announced the setting-up of a Sherlock Holmes Memorial Prize. Such was the outcry, Doyle resurrected his character (in The Return of Sherlock Homes, 1903-4) and continued to write his detective cases for the Strand until his passing. Green & Gibson.
