Von Neumann discovered continuous geometry in 1935 during the course of his research on rings of operators in Hilbert spaces. The present works collects many (though not all, see Halperin's foreword) of von Neumann's results in this area. A very attractive copy of this posthumous work based on lectures given by von Neumann in 1936 and 1937. First edition of these notes capturing von Neumann's thought as he developed his major contributions to lattice theory: his concepts of a "continuous geometry" and a "regular ring". Von Neumann, a founding member of the Institute for Advanced Study, delivered these lectures in the spring of 1936: they were recorded by Dr L. Roy Wilcox (1912-1999), who had just obtained his doctorate in mathematics from Chicago. Von Neumann regarded Wilcox's notes highly enough to make efforts to publish them: his other work intervened but they did eventually appear, posthumously, in the Continuous Geometry volume of 1960. Light bumping, faint sunning to spine, contents crisp and fresh: a very good copy indeed.

Seidenberg wrote his thesis, Valuation Ideals in Rings of Polynomials in Two Variables, under the direction of leading algebraic geometers and mathematician Oskar Zariski. Very Good. Tape at spine ends is worn and fraying, some corner wear, spotting to bottom textblock edge. Seidenberg has made several mathematical notations in pencil and noted errors in the text. Consists of notes taken by L. Roy Wilcox on lectures given by the famous polymath John von Neumann during 1935-36. There was a later volume of notes from 1936-37.
