Contemporary armorial bookplate of Sir Richard Bempde Johnstone, bt., in each volume. A new edition of Milton's collected prose works, expanding and improving on the 'Toland' edition of 1698, with the addition of the Character of the Long Parliament, first published separately in 1681 and here included in the History of Britain in the second volume. The edition is largely the work of Thomas Birch, who wrote the long prefatory Life, and the fine portrait frontispiece in volume I is by George Vertue after Jonathan Richardson. Provenance: this copy belonged to Sir Richard Vanden Bempde Johnstone (1732-1807), 1st bt, a Yorkshire landowner who was MP for Weymouth in the 1790s. Coleridge 74.
