The work was only published in the years 1843 and 44.Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece and many monochrome vignettes and full page illustrations, and three plates including two duel-toned illustrations. The pages are printed on green, white, pink and blue paper. Collated, complete.A very scarce periodical featuring a collection of humorous stories, verses and illustrations. Most the stories are written anonymously, with some contributions from the likes of Bon Gaultier, the assumed pen name of Sir Theodore Martin and William Edmondstoune Aytoun. The works are accompanied with fantastic caricatures and illustrations, with many from the noted comic artist Alfred Crowquill.In the publisher's original pictorial covers. In the publisher's original boards. Externally, loss to the head and tail of the spine, wear to the extremities, marks to the boards, and joints starting slightly. Humorous articles, verses, etc., by Dickens, Thackeray, and others. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings designed by Alfred Forrester (known under the pseudonym of Alfred Crowquill), John Leech, and others. Contemporary bookseller's ticket and later owner's small bookplate on front pastedown, autograph note in pencil on front free endpaper. Contemporary half polished levant and pebbled cloth over boards, gilt decorated spine with red titling label, cream endpapers, all edges gilt. Head and tail of spine and one corner tip neatly refurbished in matching leather, joints are rubbed with light wear at corners, a few small stains on endpapers, very good.
