Pamphlet. Zustand: Good. First Edition. First book on Metallurgy in English. LACKS TITLE. Quarto. (6 3/4" x 5 1/2"). Disbound with leather remnants of spine. Woodcut initials and decorations. Our copy missing first unsigned signature : 4to: B-I , K [$3 signed]; 34 leaves, pp. [8] 1-60 (ESTC Citation S100866. STC Citation 20000). Light browning to pages and trimming. One or two words underlined, and several corresponding manuscript marginalia - very scholarly citations, arguably, in 17th century hand. Some ancillary alternate hand numbering of higher (page?) numbers to top right corners, perhaps cross referencing information on the few hand-marked pages to another work. Doodles and ciphers in several hands to verso of last blank, but the dominant mark is a large elegant signature and note: "Jane Reynolds, her Hand & Pen; and [possibly], She will be Good." with "Jane", "Platt" and "Jane" below. Upside down, are ciphering perhaps in the same 17th century hand: "Rec'd. of George" followed by a column of (six rows of) figures. Included are chapters on the creation of mountains and minerals; how to find them; melting and refining of metals; Tinns & Lead; Iron; Copper; Silver; Gold; The Art of Creating Gold; Inferiour Metals; Finding Pit-Coales; Determining what plants will yield which colours. "Contains some interesting notices of the gold and silver mines in Peru, New England, Virginia, the Bermudas, and other parts of America. The author gives a receipt by which he claims to have produced pure gold, but at a cost greater than its value." This is the first practical guide in English on identifying economic minerals and metallurgy. It is an interesting treatise, containing a wealth of factual information, illustrated by the author's own experiments. Mention is made of the gold and silver mines in New England, Virginia and the Bermudas, as well as other parts of America (Sabin 63360); (USTC 3020588). Missing Title Page. Rare first edition of what has been called the first book on metallurgy in English. Gabriel Plattes (1600-1644) wrote several works, one on matters of agriculture and husbandry ("Treatise of Husbandry", 1638) and this one on minerals and mining, which went through several successive editions. It is said that he "possessed a knowledge of contemporary agricultural and mining practices [and] is possible that he had been employed with his friend William Englebert, a military and drainage engineer" (ODNB), to whom Platte's first two books are dedicated ("TO HIS WORTHY FRIENDMASTER William Englebert Esquire. Health, and Happinesse Temporall and Eternall, is heartily wished" (Leaf B). In distinguishing this book from a previous work, Platt writes (B3): ".wishing all those that desire to be skilfull in these affairs; to take a little paines to read that Booke, which differeth from this no other wayes, but as the Art of Surgery differeth from the Art of Physicke: for as surgeons deale chiefly with the externall parts of mans body, yet stand in need of the knowledge of all the parts, and as Physitians chiefly deale with the internall parts, yet cannot be without the knowledge of the externall parts: So though that Bookie treate wholly upon the discovering of the Treasures hidden in the Superficies and exurball parts of the Terrestrial Globe, yet the knowledge of many things therein contained are very conducible to make a skilfull Mineralist." Platte's work was largely ignored during his lifetime, but gained in stature, alas, after he had literally collapsed and died of starvation on the streets of London. It is said he refused economic help when profferred. His papers found their way into the hands of Samuel Hartlib who published one particular work, of fantasy, "Description of the Famous Kingdom of Macaria" under his own name. It was later discovered that the work was by Platte, and was rightfully attributed. (Notes, in part, from The Mineralogical Record, out of Tucson, Arizona).…

2 volumes. Folio. [365 x 240 mm] pp. 24 [gFrench text], xvi, 45 [35* numbered 8 times] [German text]; hand painted frontispiece of garland of flowers heightened in gilt; 100 hand coloured plates: 20 [French text], [2], 46 [German text]; 100 hand coloured plates. The deluxe edition in folio with the coloured hand painted frontispiece; list of 37 subscribers. Contemporary tree calf with early reback, spines gilt, margin repair to page 7/8 of Volume 1 French text. The final 20 illustrations of volume 2 are laid down onto what appears to be different versions of the plates. These final plates bear captions in both German and French whereas the first 180 plates bear German captions only. The pastedowns bear a shelf ticket and pencil note "(coll) Metternich", possibly from the library of Prince Klemens von Metternich [1773 â" 1859], Austrian politician and statesman. A Fine copy of perhaps the rarest of pomological works. The genesis of this copy is curious and complex having both the French and German texts. The French title page of Volume 1 bears the date MDCCCXVI, although the last four digits have been inserted in ink over a scratched out date [probably 1796 or 7]. The German title page is dated 1816, but again the last three digits have been replaced. The imprints read as follows: Volume 1. French. Vienne: A. Blumauer, MDCCCXVI. [but probably 1796 or 1797] Volume 1. German. Vien: Rudolph Graffer, 1816. [but probably 1796 or 1797] Volume 2. French. Vienne: A. Blumauer, MDCCLXXXXVII. Volume 2. German. Vien : A Blumauer, 1796. According to all the best authorities the German edition preceded the French, but they date it to 1797. It is reasonable to speculate that early in the life of this copy, perhaps in 1816, the German edition was rebound to include the French text before the German presumably to avoid breaking the existing text block. This French text would have been supplied either directly from the publisher who scratched out the dates, or from a defective or incomplete copy of the French issue. It is certain that the French text had at some time been separate from the rest of this copy, as the inner margins of the text bear damp staining, which is not present on the frontispiece, German text or the plates. Genuinely rare both in commerce and in institutional collections; no other copy is recorded with both the French and German texts. Nissen 1097; Plesch p. 292 [defective copy] ; Janson pp. 289/91; An Oak Spring Pomona 50.…

Modern half calf over contemporary grey paper boards. First edition and an ATTRACTIVE UNUSED COPY, with beautiful botanical plates and sections on the exotic arts of: painting on velvet "the downy surface of the velvet, and the brilliancy of the liquid colours used to produce fruit and flower, give it a decided superiority over any other kind of flower painting, for ornamenting bell ropes, ottomans, &c. (page 70); and Oriental Tinting "fruit and flowers painted on paper, in this style of colouring, are exceedingly soft and beautiful, and from the ease with which persons, unacquainted with drawing, can produce pictures by means of stencil patterns." (page 80). Abbey Life 189.…

London: Isaac Taylor Hinton. 1829. 4to. Contemporary half calf with marbled sides, sometime rebacked with original spine laid on, spine with gilt floral tools and two black morocco gilt lettering pieces, marbled endpapers; pp. [4], 96, [48] leaves of plates (24 plates, each in two states, hand-coloured and uncoloured); spine and extremities lightly rubbed, slight fading to gilt tooling; internally generally clean, some offsetting to plate XXI and light pencil marks to plate XXII; very good.First edition of this uncommon drawing manual, with each of the plates issued in two states, hand-coloured and uncoloured, by Nathaniel Whittock, 'one of the first to publish lithograph illustrations systematically coloured by hand' (Abbey).Whittock (1791-1860) is now best known as a topographical engraver producing bird's-eye views of cities including London, Oxford, York, and Melbourne in the 1830s-50s. In 1829, when this book was published, he had recently moved on from being 'Teacher of Drawing and Perspective, and Lithographist to the University of Oxford', where he also worked with the Ashmolean Museum and in scientific circles, to establish himself in north London as a society drawing master. The first twenty lessons in this book are devoted to the drawing and colouring of specimens as varied as the humble apple blossom, the exotic passion flower, grapes, and assorted molluscs. The final four cover more general artistic topics, including the use of velvet as the best surface for botanical illustration and the use of stencils on soft paper. Each subject is illustrated with paired plates, one hand-coloured to demonstrate the finished effect and one uncoloured to emphasise draughtsmanship.Whittock's book is a particularly attractive example of a popular type of early nineteenth-century instructional drawing manual combining natural history and practical instruction, and was followed a year later by another volume on birds, mammals and insects. After this short period, he increasingly concentrated on the cityscapes on which his reputation rests, so this work represents his most important contribution to botanical art.We find only five copies in the UK (NLS, Newcastle, Royal Horticultural Society, V&A, and Edinburgh).
