First edition of the first James Bond continuation novel published after Ian Fleming's 1964 death. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Tom Adams. The first James Bond continuation novel published after Ian Fleming's 1964 death, Colonel Sun centres on the fictional British Secret Service operative James Bond and his mission to track down the kidnappers of M, his superior at the Secret Service. During the mission he discovers a communist Chinese plot to cause an international incident. Bond, assisted by a Greek spy working for the Russians, finds M on a small Aegean island, rescues him and kills the two main plotters: Colonel Sun Liang-tan and a former Nazi commander, Von Richter.

[James Bond] FIRST EDITION, First Impression. Version with dropped quad mark to copyright page. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.255 [1]. Publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine. Cartographical endpapers. With the dust-jacket illustrated by Tom Adams priced at 21s. Contents clean, edges toned, jacket with some tape marks to reverse side, neatly laminated. Very good. After Ian Fleming's death in 1964, Glidrose decided to continue the Bond franchise with a series of well-known authors each writing a book under the pen-name Robert Markham. However, only Kingsley Amis took up the offer, and in 1968 his 007 novel, 'Colonel Sun' was published. Bond fans now consider it a classic, although sales proved disappointing. Amis had previously written a critical work on Bond, entitled 'The James Bond Dossier'. There is also a suggestion that Amis finished 'The Man With The Golden Gun' after Fleming's death, and that Colonel Sun was his incentive from Glidrose.
