Lucius Wilmerding was born in New York City on January 24, 1880 was graduated at Harvard in 1901. In 1906 he set up for himself as a stock broker. Four years later he joined in the firm of Ruggles, Gray & Wilmerding, which in 1939 merged with Post & Flagg, which was absorbed by Harris, Upham & Company, of which Wilmerding was a limited partner. He was a trustee of the Museum of the City of New York. He was appointed by the New York Public Library to its committee on circulation, and he became a trustee of that library. He was vice-president of the American Library in Paris. He was trustee and one time president of the Grolier Club, president of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. His greatest interest was the New York Historical Society, which he served as trustee. Secretary for Domestic Correspondence, and Treasurer, and as a member of many committees. Mr. Wilmerding early became a collector, and in later years specialized in English and French literature, colored plate books, and historical bindings. This is a rare complete set of the catalogues of the three auctions, which constituted the opportunity within the United States to acquire "a group of continental books and manuscripts and fine bindings such as had not been sold in America since the Hoe sales in 1911-12, dealers flocked to New York from all over Europe." (Wolf and Fleming, Rosenbach: A Biography, pp. 576-7). This is a auction public sale catalog, generally describing each piece in a brief paragraph of detail, from a free public exhibition and auction. Parke-Bernet Galleries was an American auction house, active from 1937 to 1964, when Sotheby's purchased it. The company was founded by a group of employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. By 1964, the company was the largest auction house in America, with 115 employees and total sales of $11 million ($108 million in 2023). That year, Sotheby's purchased a controlling interest of 75% in the gallery for $1.5 million ($15 million in 2023). The company was founded in 1937, by a group of forty former employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. In January 1938, the first auction was held in a gallery at 742 Fifth Avenue. The next year, the company took over the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries, consisting of the American Art Association and the Anderson Galleries (formerly Anderson Auction Company). Parke-Bernet oversaw the sale of the estate of Georges Lurcy, a prominent art collector, whose estate included works by Raoul Dufy, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The collection sold for over 2 million pounds in 1957, a record. Other customers of the company included Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Paul Mellon and Henry Ford II. Ford's purchase of La Serre by Renoir through Parke-Bernet was a world record. Parke-Bernet also oversaw the sale of the Mrs. Jonathan Amory Haskell's extensive Americana collection and the estate of Hagop Kevorkian, the Armenian archaeologist, antiquities dealer, and philanthropist whose foundation gave major contributions to support the study of the Near East and Middle East at the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and Columbia University.

Collection of Rowfant Club ephemera. Various sizes, 12mo to folio, the three broadsides, 17 1/2 x 11 3/4 inches or larger, and including pamphlets, leaflets, cards, handbills, and broadsides, providing a rather detailed look at the month-to-month workings of an active book collectors' club; a goodly number of the items are nicely printed on well-made paper, but with few attributions as to printers. Brewer (1858-1933), editor of a Cedar Rapids newspaper, retired from that job in 1907, to found and become president of the Torch Press, a publisher of scholarly journals and a good number of books over the next 30 years, while at the same time attending to his collection of Leigh Hunt and the preparation of a number of bibliographies. The first item in this collection is an autograph letter, signed by Charles Shackleton as acting club secretary Oct. 4, 1904, on Rowfant Club stationery, informing Brewer of his election the club as a non-resident member, the balance representing a significant printed documentation of the club's activities from that date through 1916 when Brewer resigned his membership. Several cards and envelopes bear Brewer's address. Mostly very good or better condition, but with expected storage soiling (a few pieces with heavy soiling), several handbills with chipped edges, and one of the large broadsides printed on poor quality paper (fragile, brittle, separations along folds, etc.). Mostly wrappers or self-wrappers. (10656).

These programmes and poems were printed for the celebrations given to Nordenskiöld by the students at Uppsala University, two weeks after the return of the Vega to Stockholm following the navigation of the north east passage. The occasion included a carnival, and the songs written in praise of Nordenskiöld and his achievement.
All items are neatly mounted on plain sheets of paper (foolscap folio, one or two per sheet, rectos only, attached with a piece of lightly discoloured tape along the top margin). In virtually every instance, a detailed caption is typed above the sample. The sheets are bound together with two split-pin fasteners with a plain card front cover (the rear cover is no longer present). Bound in before one section is a duplicate typed report, 'Use of Ornamental Telegram Stationery in Other Countries', signed by J.C. Harrison, Inspector (Telegraphs) (one page foolscap folio, written 'At Sea. 13th January 1948'). The report makes it clear that Harrison visited the countries in question, and that he collected these ephemeral items (the word 'Specimen' written in ink on a quantity of them is in his hand). The final comment in his report is 'I propose to file the attached specimens in the Branch papers for future reference'. It would appear he did this, but at some later stage, this volume was the only item rescued from the jaws of the incinerator into which a large quantity of those Branch papers was fed. An interesting website by Ron McMullen contains some information about J.C. Harrison (in the section on the Simplex Auto). Apparently he was 'a Telegraphist and later in 1945 was Inspector (Telegraphs) Telegraph Branch, Central Office, Melbourne'. He is also the author of 'Ninety Years of Telegraph Progress' [1945?], an unpublished paper held in the Australian Telecommunications Commission Library. Australia Post closed its telegram service on 7 March 2011.
James Chauvel embarked Brisbane on 26 October 1916, disembarking at Suez on 3 December. He was appointed for transport duty back to Australia, and was attached to the Remount Unit awaiting embarkation on A50 'Itonus' on 24 December 1916. When the vessel was torpedoed off Port Said on 21 December, he was ordered to Moascar for duty at the Australian and New Zealand Training Centre and Details Camp. On 1 August 1917 he was appointed Commanding Officer of the Details Camp; he eventually embarked for Australia in July 1919, with the temporary rank of Major. The collection contains over 160 original photographs, the most significant one being a portrait of Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Chauvel on horseback, inscribed and signed 'Harry Chauvel | Damascus | 2.10.18'. One group of 70 photographs, mainly vintage prints, depicts the Australian Light Horse in the Middle East. There are many interesting images (often with detailed captions), including four showing the Asluj bridge being destroyed by the 1st LHB. Captions include 'Near Romani'; 'On the beach at El Arish'; 'Taking ammunition up to the front line, Jordan Valley'; 'Pumping Station at Beersheba'; 'Camel Corps entering Beersheba'; 'Magdhaba Prisoners in the Compound at Arish'; and '1st Bgde a few minutes after taking El Arish. General Cox tent being pitched'. Harry Chauvel appears in a number of these photographs. One unique item is the souvenir menu for the 'Schola Grammatica Sydniensis Re-union Dinner on Active Service. Jerusalem, 31st July, 1918'. This example is signed by 21 of those present, including Lieutenant-General Sir Harry Chauvel (the president of the group), his brother (Captain) James Allen Chauvel, Lieutenant-Colonels C.D. Fuller and J.C. Storey, and numerous other officers. Provenance: James Allen Chauvel; by descent. [A quantity; full details available on request].
