Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2 volumes, 4to (26 cm), frontispiece with the author's photograph, XIX, 886 pp.; frontispiece, XVIII, pp. 887-1654. Publisher's cloth in dust jackets (jackets frayed at extremities and slightly discolored, text uniformly clean and tight). This comprehensive two-volume set brings together the complete published mathematical research of R. H. Bing (1914-1986), one of the twentieth century's most influential topologists and a devoted student of R. L. Moore at the University of Texas. Spanning over 1,600 pages and comprising 113 papers, the collection is organized thematically across the major areas of Bing's research, including General Topology, Planar Sets and Continua, Topological Classifications, the Topology of 3-Manifolds, and Miscellaneous Topics, with subsections covering metrization, retracts, pseudo-arcs, decompositions, engulfing, tameness, and the Poincaré Conjecture, among others. Volume 1 opens with a biographical study, a chronology, a list of Bing's doctoral students, and a full classified bibliography, providing essential scholarly context for the papers that follow. A landmark reference for researchers and graduate students in geometric and set-theoretic topology, this set stands as both a testament to Bing's extraordinary mathematical legacy and an indispensable resource for anyone working in the field.
