Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2012. Autonomous robots may become our closest companions in the near future. While the technology for physically building such machines is already available today, a problem lies in the generation of the behavior for such complex machines. Nature proposes a solution: young children and higher animals learn to master their complex brain-body systems by playing. Can this be an option for robots? How can a machine be playful? The book provides answers by developing a general principle---homeokinesis, the dynamical symbiosis between brain, body, and environment---that is shown to drive robots to self- determined, individual development in a playful and obviously embodiment- related way: a dog-like robot starts playing with a barrier, eventually jumping or climbing over it; a snakebot develops coiling and jumping modes; humanoids develop climbing behaviors when fallen into a pit, or engage in wrestling-like scenarios when encountering an opponent. The book also develops guided self-organization, a new method that helps to make the playful machines fit for fulfilling tasks in the real world. The book provides two levels of presentation. Students and scientific researchers interested in the field of robotics, self-organization and dynamical systems theory may be satisfied by the in-depth mathematical analysis of the principle, the bootstrapping scenarios, and the emerging behaviors. But the book additionally comes with a robotics simulator inviting also the non- scientific reader to simply enjoy the fabulous world of playful machines by performing the numerous experiments. Content: 1.Introduction.- 2.Self-Organization in Nature and Machines.- 3.The Sensorimotor Loop. - 4.Principles of Self-Regulation - Homeostasis . - 5.A General Approach to Self-Organization - Homeokinesis.- 6.From Fixed-Point Flows to Hysteresis Oscillators.- 7.Symmetries, Resonances, and Second Order Hysteresis.- 8.Low Dimensional Robotic Systems.- 9.Model Learning.- 10.High-Dimensional Robotic Systems.- 11.Facing the Unknown - Homeokinesis in a New Representation*.- 12.Guided Self-Organization - A First Realization.- 13.Channeling Self-Organization.- 14.Reward-Driven Self-Organization.- 15.Algorithmic Implementation.- 16.The LPZROBOTS Simulator.- 17.Discussion and Perspectives.- List of Figures.- List of Videos.- List of Experiments.- References.- Index. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Cognitive Machines: The Future of Intelligent Robotics explores a world where machines no longer simply follow commands but learn, adapt, and reason. Blending science, technology, and visionary insight, this book invites readers to imagine the rise of robots that think with us, not just for us. From the dawn of automation to the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, it traces how robotics has evolved from mechanical arms on factory floors to self-aware companions capable of perception, decision-making, and creativity. Through accessible explanations and thought-provoking scenarios, it reveals how cognitive machines could reshape medicine, industry, education, and even human relationships. But the story goes beyond technology-it delves into the profound ethical and societal questions that come with machines capable of judgment and empathy. Written for curious minds, innovators, and dreamers, Cognitive Machines is both a roadmap to the robotics revolution and a call to engage with its future responsibly. It doesn't offer distant science fiction-it presents a near horizon where artificial cognition is real, and the choices we make today will shape how we live tomorrow.Provocative, inspiring, and deeply human, this book paints a vivid picture of a future where machines don't just serve us-they evolve with us.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book presents research performed as part of the EU project on biomimetic multimodal learning in a mirror neuron-based robot (MirrorBot) and contri- tions presented at the International AI-Workshop on NeuroBotics. The ov- all aim of the book is to present a broad spectrum of current research into biomimetic neural learning for intelligent autonomous robots. There is a need for a new type of robot which is inspired by nature and so performs in a more exible learned manner than current robots. This new type of robot is driven by recent new theories and experiments in neuroscience indicating that a biological and neuroscience-oriented approach could lead to new life-like robotic systems. The book focuses on some of the research progress made in the MirrorBot project which uses concepts from mirror neurons as a basis for the integration of vision, language and action. In this book we show the development of new techniques using cell assemblies, associative neural networks, and Hebbian-type learning in order to associate vision, language and motor concepts. We have developed biomimetic multimodal learning and language instruction in a robot to investigate the task ofsearching for objects. As well as the researchperformed in this area for the MirrorBot project, the second part of this book incorporates signi cant contributions from other research in the eld of biomimetic robotics. This second part of the book concentrates on the progress made in neuroscience inspired robotic learning approaches (in short: NeuroBotics).
