In point of authorship, it stands preeminent. Hugo Ziemann was at one time caterer for that Prince Napoleon who was killed while fighting the Zulus in Africa. He was afterwards steward of the famous Hotel Splendide in Paris. Later he conducted the celebrated Brunswick Cafe in New York, and still later he gave to the Hotel Richelieu, in Chicago, a cuisine which won the applause of even the gourmets of foreign lands. It was here that he laid the famous "spread" to which the chiefs of the warring factions of the Republican Convention sat down in June, 1888, and from which they arose with asperities softened, differences harmonized and victory organized. Mrs. F.L. Gillette is no less proficient and capable, having made a life-long and thorough study of cookery and housekeeping, especially as adapted to the practical wants of average American homes." ; includes antidotes for various poisons ; FINE. George Peabody (1795-1869), merchant, international financier and philanthropist from Baltimore, settled permanently in London in 1837 and established a firm specialising in foreign exchange and American securities. He became so powerful that he was able to compete with the Rothschilds and Barings and he acted as an unofficial ambassador for the American business communities in London. When in 1851 America was humiliated by the failure of Congress to appropriate money for a display at the Crystal Palace exhibition, his gift of $15,000 made it possible to show American products and inventions besides those of other nations. The book records the speeches and toasts at the dinner, and was organised and produced by Henry Stevens of Vermont. The speakers included Peabody, Mr F. P. Corbin, Col. T. Bigelow Lawrence and J. C. Bancroft David of the American Legation to London, the Earl of Granville (the Chairman of the Royal Commission), Robert R. Walker (Secretary of the Treasury of the United States), Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer, and Joseph Paxton(architect of the Crystal Palace).

In den Warenkorb114pp 23x15, blue cloth, glt decoration Cloth grubby, some rubbing on the edges, foxing throughout, good thus. A private published summary of the celebration dinner hosted by Peabody for the many (roughly 150) guests related to the American section at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Peabody had already used a substantial amount of his own money to improve his countrymen's exhibit after Congress refused to fund it, and this dinner was marked to tributes to his generosity and to his efforts to support Anglo-American friendship. The decoration on the front cover is a laurel wreath, and doesn't include the eagle seen on some copies; perhaps the American guests were given copies with their national emblem on, and those without were reserved for other purposes.
