Zustand: Good. The Awakening is the story of Edna Pontellier, an attractive young wife and the mother of two sons living in the Creole south in the late 19th century. Edna feels herself trapped in a marriage where she is unable to express her passionate sensuality and as a result explores a spiritual and sexual awakening through an affair with a younger man during one summer while her husband is away. Liberated by this experience she sends her children away and is determined to live a more independent and self-determined life. This behavior would lead to her downfall as it was not seen favorably by the members of her conservative 19th century southern community. The Awakening is a landmark modernist work which illustrates the confines of late 19th century America for women and the beginning of an era of changing social attitudes towards their role in society. The liberal portrayal of Edna in The Awakening was meet with great criticism when it was first published and essentially ended Chopin's literary career. The reaction to its publication is indicative of the social attitude towards increasing freedom for women during this era. At the same time the novel was a harbinger of the greater independence that was soon to come for women in America. This edition also contains a collection of seventeen of Chopin's most popular short stories and is printed on premium acid-free paper.…

Each book includes educational tools alongside the text, enabling students and readers alike to gain a deeper and more developed understanding of the writer and their work. When The Awakening was first published in 1899, critical outcry proved so vociferous that the novel was banned for decades. As the heroine, Edna Pontellier, awakens to her own desires, she begins to question her ideas about marriage, motherhood, society, art, and the nature of love itself. A milestone in American fiction, The Awakening is an unforgettably poignant novel of self-discovery that has inspired generations of readers. Enriched Classics enhance your engagement by introducing and explaining the historical and cultural significance of the work, the author's personal history, and what impact this book had on subsequent scholarship. Each book includes discussion questions that help clarify and reinforce major themes and reading recommendations for further research. Read with confidence.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Frédéric Chopin's reputation as one of the Great Romantics endures, but as Benita Eisler reveals in her elegant and elegiac biography, the man was more complicated than his iconic image. A classicist, conservative, and dandy who relished his conquest of Parisian society, the Polish émigré was for a while blessed with genius, acclaim, and the love of Europe's most infamous woman writer, George Sand. But by the age of 39, the man whose brilliant compositions had thrilled audiences in the most fashionable salons lay dying of consumption, penniless and abandoned by his lover. In the fall of 1849, his lavish funeral was attended by thousands--but not by George Sand. In this intimate portrait of an embattled man, Eisler tells the story of a turbulent love affair, of pain and loss redeemed by art, and of worlds--both private and public--convulsed by momentous change. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Unveiling Kate Chopin by Emily Toth A vivid new biography of the author of The Awakening marking the 100th anniversary of its publication Aided by newly discovered diaries and manuscripts, Emily Toth tells the unvarnished story of the passionate Irish American girl from St. Louis who grew up to write The Awakening. Published in 1899, Kate Chopin's novel about a sensual, artistic woman whose desires cannot be contained by marriage and motherhood stunned and infuriated Chopin's contemporaries. She commits unutterable crimes against polite society, wrote one fuming reviewer. In Unveiling Kate Chopin, Toth, the foremost authority on Chopin's life and works, draws on manuscripts recently found in a Massachusetts warehouse and paints a haunting portrait of this woman who married a Louisiana Frenchman, mothered six children, and wrote a novel that was too worldly for Victorian America. She celebrates the ambitious Chopin as an artist of unique wit and astonishing talent, as one of the first authors to craft a public image (by creating a salon and inventing networking in St. Louis), as a writer of short stories set in the Louisiana bayou country, and especially as the daring author of the most radical, notorious American novel of the late nineteenth century. Emily Toth is a professor of English and women's studies at Louisiana State University. …
