Super royal8vo, engraved frontispiece of the Victoria Bridge over the St. Lawrence, engraved title with vignette of the building of the Great Eastern, 935pp ending with Kreosote ie Vol 1 only. Frontis and 7 full page engravings, one of the aqueduct of the Greek Emperors near Pyrco, a dramatic one of a storm outside Ramsgate Harbour and one of Whitehaven Harbour. Half brown calf, gilt, marbled boards, five raised bands, gilt on red lettering piece. Small damaged area at foot of backstrip, 1/2 inch crack at top of upper joint, repaired 1/2 inch tear in fore edge of frontis, same tear in fore edge of title and following two leaves,lacks the printed title otherwise a VG clean and tight copy. Four full page woodcuts, one of the Castle cutlery grinding mill near Sheffield and one underground in the Bradley coal mine. Heavy book.

Zustand: Fair. 1st Edition. Complete two volume set. Half calf leather bindings with marbled boards. Morocco title and volume labels to spines. Rubbing and wear to spines and corners. Joints cracked, rear board of Volume II is detached. Pages lxxiii / lxxiv + lxxv/lxxvi in volume I have been torn off and repaired with a paper strip to upper corner, these pages and the adjoining pages and plate are also stained to the corner. Occasional patches of foxing elsewhere. Page blocks are solidly bound. Complete with 40 engraved plates and over 2400 illustrations within the text. Includes plates of the original Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait, Crystal Palace and a fold-out plan of the stands at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Overall condition is Fair.
