First edition of the first architectural pattern book for the West Indies and one of the first architectural books concerning the Americas. Literature devoted to rural architecture in the former French colonies is rare in general, the only example of such a work is the present volume. (d'Orgeix-Frémaux, 2013) Différens projets is an extremely scarce book by the Chevalier d'Albaret, who intended his work as a pattern book for practice in the West Indies. The book is considered the first collection of architectural designs for the special requirements of the Caribbean region, such as the tropical heat, heavy rains, hurricanes, earthquakes, and other incidents of colonial life, like marauders or slave revolts. D'Albaret a little-known Parisian architect associated with the Hôtel des Monnaies (Royal Mint) and the maintenance of churches and vicarages of the Compiègne region (Bailley 2018; Gallet 1995) was commissioned by the wealthy Jamaican planter, John Blagrove (17521824) "to produce an architectural pattern book of newly designed houses well suited to hot climates, more particularly in the West Indies. The book was available in London bookshops by December 1776. The introductory passages of the pattern book make it clear that the designs contained therein depend extensively on advice from d'Albaret's patron, the "English gentleman," Mr. Blagrove. D'Albaret was 'encouraged by an enlightened enthusiast, who himself shed considerable light for me on the subject of air temperature and the materials that one can safely use in that climate.' This was especially important since, in d'Albaret's words, the country intended to receive these houses was 'unknown to me.' The designs are astonishing; the volume includes plans, elevations, and sections for a total of nine villas as well as a discussion of materials and techniques for building in the tropics." (Nelson, 2016) The plates were engraved by Claude René Gabriel Poulleau (b. 1749), a French engraver, best known for his ornamental and architectural engravings, among them the views of the Hôtel des Monnaies. Extremely scarce, apparently printed only in a small number of copies. RBH lists only 2 records for the title: Sotheby's 1991 and 2012.
