A second edition, with additional poems, which was published in 1930. ***Very good in dark-blue smooth cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and front board. The gilt is still quite bright - just slightly dulled on the spine. The boards have some fading to and near the spine and at the edges of the front and back boards. No bumps or creases, and no tears to the cloth. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good, with a contemporaneous ownership name in ink at the top of the front free endpaper. ***Please note that there is some damp marking which affects some of the lower outer corners (please see scans). A few marginal notes in soft pencil to the Preface, and another soft pencil note on p.56, but no other obvious annotations. No creasing or tears. Some of the pages remain uncut at the top edge, mainly towards the end of the book. No dustwrapper. ***xvi prelim-pages plus 160 pages including an extensive section of Notes and an Appendix plus Index of First Lines at the back of the book. 198mm x 135mm. ***Contents: Introduction to the Second Edition, Dedication of the First Edition, Author's Preface, Early Poems, Poems 1876-1889, Unfinished Poems and Fragments, Editor's Notes, Appendix, Notes to the Additional Poems, Index of First Lines. ***'Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ (28 July 1844 - 8 June 1889) was an English poet and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous fame places him among the leading English poets. His prosody - notably his concept of sprung rhythm - established him as an innovator, as did his praise of God through vivid use of imagery and nature. Only after his death did Robert Bridges publish a few of Hopkins's mature poems in anthologies, hoping to prepare for wider acceptance of his style. By 1930 Hopkins's work was seen as one of the most original literary advances of his century. It intrigued such leading 20th-century poets as T. S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, W. H.
