Von diesem ist uns als längstes zusammenhängendes Stück die Cena Trimalchionis überliefert, in der die Abendteuer des Ich-Erzählers Enkolp und seiner Gefährten beim Gastmahl des Trimalchio dargestellt werden. Bei diesen Erzählungen handelt es sich um ein Unikum , obwohl es an griechischen Vorlagen und Parallelen nicht mangelt, wie zum Beispiel für die Novellenerzählungen, die an einigen Stelle die Handlung unterbrechen und von denen das behandelte Kapitel eine ist.Als Kostbarkeit der Satyrica gilt die Darstellung des Vulgärlateins, auf das in den folgenden Ausführungen an verschieden Stellen hingewiesen wird.Bis zum Kapitel 62 haben Enkolp und seine Freunde schon mancherlei Sonderbarkeiten bei Trimalchios Gastmahl erlebt, bei denen der Gastgeber keine Gelegenheit auslässt, um seinen Reichtum zu präsentieren und seine Gäste mit ungewöhnlichen Speisen zu schockieren. Während das Erstaunen bei Enkolp anfangs noch sehr groß ist, wirkt die Cena schon bald wie eine Inszenierung, die nicht zum ersten Mal aufgeführt wird. Die Wende, bei der sich das noch Humorvolle zum Geschmacklosen hin wendet, vollzieht sich in Kapitel 52. Die Vorgänge werden immer absonderlicher und die Gespräche absurder. In diesen Teil der Cena fallen auch die folgenden Ausführungen.Ich habe das 62. Kapitel für meine Bearbeitungen ausgewählt, weil ich die Textgattung der Novelle interessant finde und sich an ihr die sprachlichen Besonderheiten Petrons gut aufzeigen lassen.Einen besonderen Schwerpunkt werde ich auf die crux matavitatau (62,9) legen, weil diese viel umstritten ist und oft Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Aufsätze war.Ansonsten gehe ich bei der Interpretation chronologisch vor und bearbeite das Kapitel Satz für Satz, wobei ich die Gesamtzusammenhänge aufweise.
