In den WarenkorbZustand: Gut. X, 282 S. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - Nearly 2000 years ago, musing on this problem of human flourishing and how it may be secured, the Stoic teacher Epictetus instructed his students in the Stoic art of living. This new translation of Epictetus' Handbook brings his ancient teachings to those who wish to live the philosophic life by finding a way to live happily in the world without being overwhelmed by it. In this book, readers will learn how to sustain emotional harmony and a 'good flow of life' whatever fortune may hold in store for them. This modern English translation of the complete Handbook is supported by the first thorough commentary since that of Simplicius, 1500 years ago, along with a detailed introduction, extensive glossary, index of key terms, and helpful tables that clarify Stoic ethical doctrines at a glance. -- Accompanying the Handbook is the Tablet of Cebes, a curious and engaging text from an unknown author. In complete contrast to the Handbook's more conventional philosophical presentation, the Tablet is an allegory that shows progress to philosophical wisdom as a journey through a landscape inhabited by personifications of Happiness, Fortune, the Virtues and Vices. It is apparent that there are Stoic influences on this work, making it a fitting companion text to the Handbook of Epictetus. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Later edition. 7 vol (6 volumes bound in seven). 8vo. For pagination, please inquire. Contemporary polished calf with gold borders on each board, gold decoration to the boards' edges, spines in six compartments with gold tooling and lettering; all edges gilt. Brown endpapers and pastedowns. Volumes two, four, five, and six with a blue silk ribbon bookmark. With notes and indices by Johann Schweighaeuser. Text in Greek, notes in Latin. The set includes a few versions of Epictetus' Handbook or Enchiridion, Epictetus' fragments, two Christianized versions of the Enchiridion (one done by St. Nilus of Ancyra), Simplicius' Commentary on Epictetus, and the Tablet of Cebes, a Hellenistic work of moral philosophy. Dibdin 518-519. Oldfather 26; 294. Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Epictetus". Epictetus lived during the first and second centuries A.C.E., and began life enslaved to a Roman noble. His work survived through a historiographer's (Arrian of Nicomedia) careful compilation of his lectures. Epictetus was one of the most prominent Stoic thinkers, concerned with self-regulation, integrity, and proper perception of one's personal circumstances. Epictetus argues that we ought to only concern ourselves with achieving our personal goals, and that we should not be concerned about that which is out of our control. The Stoic philosopher was highly influential among early Christian theologians. Oldfather refers to this set as a "deservedly celebrated work of learning and criticism". Dibdin also waxes poetic about the completeness and circumspect nature of the commentaries and scholarship included in this set. A beautifully bound set of Stoic thought. The joints on volume one repaired with Japanese tissue paper, the repair extends slightly onto the spine. Volumes one, two, and seven with light to moderate wear to their extremities (the front joint of volume two and the crowns of volumes one and seven).
