Large thick quarto, original cloth; 636, 52, xiv pp. (including appendices and index), illustrated throughout. Joints starting, boards a bit worn at extremities, but very good condition overall. Large and comprehensive catalogue of wares manufactured by John Birch & Company (based in Queen Street, London). This catalogue is clearly marked 'for circulation in the colonies and foreign countries only'. Accordingly, the range of goods offered for sale reflects the needs of clients working in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Of special interest is the advanced fire-fighting equipment offered for sale in the catalogue. Eleven different models of portable fire engines are listed over six pages. Each of the fire engines is comprehensively described and illustrated, with prices and specifications likewise included. Marine engineering was a speciality of John Birch & Company. Fully kitted barges and dredging ships are advertised; followed by marine engines, and all manner of related winches, fittings and fixtures for shipwrights. As indicated by the title page, this catalogue was issued in the colonies and the range of goods reflects specialised needs. For example, agricultural equipment for colonial contexts includes windmills and artesian drilling units for the use of graziers in South Africa and Australia. Pre-fabricated corrugated iron sheds are offered for various colonial contexts, including tropical plantations and outback cattle stations. There is a large range of mining equipment, including specialist diamond prospecting apparatus. The range of goods offered in the catalogue is vast. Here follows a limited selection: engines, boilers, tractors, cranes, pulleys, winches and pile-drivers. Lathes, planing machines, and all manner of equipment for wood and steel working. Dynamos, batteries and electrical accumulator cells. Railway sleepers and related equipment for laying track. Sundry other goods including anvils, hydraulic fittings, and so forth.
