In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the fascinating account of Mary Willcocks, who posed as the fictional Princess Caraboo of Javasu, a supposed island in the Indian Ocean. Mary Baker, nee Willcocks (c. 1791-1864), fabricated an enchanting tale of kidnapping. She claimed to have been taken from the fictional Javasu by pirates and held captive on b…oard their ship, heading towards Britain. Once reaching the Bristol Channel, she jumped overboard and swam to the Gloucestershire coast. She bolstered her narrative with her garb, which was sufficiently shabby and unusual to substantiate her story. The turban-clad Caraboo aroused the pity of the American-born Elizabeth Worrall. Her husband declared that the young woman was a beggar and had her tried for vagrancy. During the short imprisonment, she was identified by a Portuguese sailor, Manuel Enes, who claimed to understand her fabricated language. After the vote of confidence, the Worralls took her in. She fuelled her mythical status by praying to a God she called "Allah-Talla", shooting a bow and arrow in the parkland, providing examples of her written language, insisting on sleeping on the floor, and on one occasion, she was known to have bathed naked in a pond in the garden. The theologian Richard Whately described the final exposure of the hoax: "A young woman came into Mr. W's kitchen, where Caraboo happened to be, and immediately exclaimed, 'Ah, Mary Baker, how come you are here?' She declared that she had long known this so-called Caraboo, who thereupon began to speak good English, and acknowledges her fraud" (Whately, p. 628). After her exposure, Willcocks travelled to America, where she dabbled in show business, but when this failed, she returned to England. For the next thirty years, she supplied leeches to the Bristol Infirmary. As a young woman Willcocks had lived "with Gypsies, whose language and rituals are recognizable in Princess Caraboo's performance at Knole" (ODNB). Provenance: this is from the library of the comedian and bibliophile Barry Humphries, with his bookplate on the front pastedown.
