Later red half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt title. = A finely illustrated monograph dealing with the demospongiae. They include over 75% of all species of sponges with nearly 8,800 species worldwide (World Porifera Database). The author, the reverend Stuart Oliver Ridley (1853-1935) was a zoologist working at the British Museum of Natural History in London. As part of the Challenger Reports volume XX (20), this work is usually found bound up with a few other monographs, but this copy is without 'ballast'.
