Title page to 'The Pleasures of Imagination' printed in red and black. Engraved vignette to title-pages of 'The Hymns of Callimachus' and 'The Pleasures of Imagination'. The Kinnaird copy, with the armorial bookplate of Lord Kinnaird to the front pastedown with his motto: 'patitur qui vincit'. Books from the Kinnaird library are generally notable for their fine condition. Small tear to inner margin of title-page of 'Callimachus', some light toning and occasional faint spotting, spine a bit wrinkled, all works generally in very good condition and handsomely bound together into a single volume. -Sole edition of this translation of verses by Callimachus, the Hellenist poet-scholar who worked in the library at Alexandria. The Hymns of Callimachus was described after the translator's death as 'upon the whole an agreeable accession to an English classical library' (Monthly Review, 1793). -The Pleasures of the Imagination is a long didactic poem by Mark Akenside, first published in 1744. The first book defines the powers of imagination and discusses the various kinds of pleasure to be derived from the perception of beauty; the second distinguishes works of imagination from philosophy; the third describes the pleasure to be found in the study of man, the sources of ridicule, the operations of the mind, in producing works of imagination, and the influence of imagination on morals. -Poetical parts of the Old Testament is a book by William Green that was published in 1781.
