4to. 4to. A contemporary assembly of seven of these interesting, usually pirated, double column American editions of major fiction from abroad. Apart from the first item (an uncommon printing of George Sand's THE USCOQUE: OR, THE RED TURBAN OF THE ARCHIPELAGO, without imprint, and conjecturally dated by the NUC as 1845), all are BROTHER JONATHAN EXTRAS or Double sheets, and include Gore's ABEDNEGO, THE MONEY LENDER (XVI, 10 Jan. 1943); Ainsworth's THE MISER'S DAUGHTER (Extra, 3 Dec. 1842); Michael Banim's FATHER CONNELL, A ROMANCE OF IRELAND (Double sheet supplement, 25 June 1842); Marryat's PERCIVAL KEENE (Extra X, 21 Sept. 1842); the anonymous LAST OF THE BULLWINKLES (Double sheet Extra XI, 15 Oct. 1842); and Bulwer Lytton's ZANONI: OR, THE SECRET ORDER (Supplement, 9 April 1842, denoted the 4th edition). Several claim to be the first American editions, and they often are. Bound in contemporary quarter red morocco and marbled boards. Fine.
