Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Poor dj. 2nd printing before publication. [moderate shelfwear, slight bumping at several corners, bookseller's rubber-stamp on front pastedown (Bertrand Smith Acres of Books, Long Beach, California); the jacket is in two pieces (separated at the rear hinge, held together by new mylar protector) and rather tattered, with heavy edgewear, large pieces missing at both ends of spine, etc.] Uncommon second novel by the author of "He Ran All the Way." Set on in Chicago during the 1920s, it's "the absorbing and uncompromising story of Benny gordon, nurtured on slum housing, public school athletics, movies, radio, and comics, and how he struggled into maturity." Almost certainly an autobiographically-inspired book, given that the author's history (born 1911, grew up on Chicago's West Side, the son of Russian immigrant parents) tracks pretty well with that of his protagonist.
