The aim of this work was to optimize the fabrication process of hot-electron bolometers and gain a deeper understanding of the underlying processes. To achieve this, the fabrication of the superconducting thin films was optimized and the superconducting properties of the films were analyzed. Detectors fabricated using the results showed a record value for the noise temperature.

The response function of these detectors is not linear in the energy range of interest, and it changes with the operating temperature, worsening the performances. The nonlinearity appeared to be dominated by the thermistor and the biasing circuit used to read the bolometer, and was modeled using few measurable parameters.A method to obtain a linear response is the result of this work. It allows a great improvement of the detector operation and data analysis. With a foreword by Fernando Ferroni.

"Warburg (Otto) setzte für seine Absorptionsmessungen zwei Instrumente ein, ein Bolometer zur Ermittlung der absolut eingestrahlten Quanten und ein Aktinometer (ab 1954 eine Ulbrichtsche Kugel) zur Bestimmung der absorbierten Strahlungsanteile. Das Bolometer, das er anfänglich benutzte, war in der Physikalisch-Technischen Reichsanstalt 1892 von Otto Lummer und Ferdinand Kuribaum entwickelt worden und hatte im Jahre 1899 Lummer und Emst Pringsheim zur Strahlungsmessung an schwarzen Körpern gedient, woraus Planck 1900 seine Strahlungsformel ableitete und das Wirkungsquantum h berechnete. Auf diese Tradition seines Meßinstrumentes war Warburg besonders stolz. Er nutzte es bis 1920 zur Untersuchung des Energieumsatzes der Photosynthese in der Reichsanstalt, wo sein Vater (Emil) seit 1911 ebenfalls mit dem Bolometer arbeitete und damit die quantitative Photochemie begründete. Für seine Versuche vereinfachte Otto Warburg die Eichung des Gerätes und führte die Strahlteilung mit Prismen oder teildurchlässigen Spiegeln ein." Ekkehard Höxtermann & Ulrich Sucker : Otto Warburg (1989) Emil Gabriel Warburg (1846-1931) physicist who during his career was professor of physics at the Universities of Strassburg, Freiburg and Berlin. His name is notably associated with the Warburg element of electrochemistry. Among his students were James Franck (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1925), Eduard Grüneisen, Robert Pohl, Erich Regener and Hans von Euler-Chelpin (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1929). He carried out research in the areas of kinetic theory of gases, electrical conductivity, gas discharges, heat radiation, ferromagnetism and photochemistry. He was the father of Otto Heinrich Warburg (Nobel Prize in Physiology, 1931). He was a friend of Albert Einstein.
