He describes its manoeuvres, actions and battles in some detail and for those interested in the campaign this concise account will provide much welcome detail. What makes it especially interesting is that the author did not simply report on the British Cavalry-he was also a great advocate for it. He challenges the emergent view that the days of cavalry were drawing to their close and champions its cause over the newly created mounted infantry. Interestingly, French would lead the British army in the opening stages of the Great War in Europe. There all would shortly learn how the experiences of the South African War would translate to the 20th century battlefield.…

Neuware - The Boer War from an able writers penAlthough the title of this book reflects some of its subject matter, in fact, the relief of Mafeking is the objective-the concluding triumph-towards which many of the events recorded within its pages are concerned and directed. More correctly it is a newspaperman's view from that golden age of journalism when the special correspondent travelled to any number of far flung battlegrounds in the company of British troops to observe, chronicle and send home the news to the British Empire's public. Filson Young was the consummate media man whose career would make a fascinating book in its own right. At the time of the Boer War he was a young journalist working for the Manchester Guardian and his writing ably represents that's newspapers reputation for fine writing. This is an excellent book in every way. Young intimately introduces us to 'Tommy Atkins' and with him and them he describes the war on the veldt-full of anecdote, expert description and incident-up to and beyond the relief of Mafeking itself. Original colour-printed map (61 x 99 cm) of the two Boer Republics, Transvaal and the Orange Free State (present day northern South Africa, southern Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana), with inset maps of Johannesburg, Ladysmith, Dundee, South Africa, Pretoria, and Kimberley. Dissected into 27 sections and backed into linen, folding between publisher's original red cloth covers lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. Old presentation inscription dated Dec. 25, 1907 to verso. Light offsetting to lower right panel, some dampstaining to cloth not affecting map, generally a very good, clean example. The map shows the northern theatre of the Second Boer War fought between the British Empire and the two Boer Republics over the Empire's influence in South Africa from 1899 to 1902, and was produced while the conflict was still ongoing. The firm of Wood & Ortlepp were a surveying and mapmaking firm based in Cape Town and specialising in regional maps of South Africa. In 1899 they formed an agreement with the Field Intelligence Department to produce a detailed map other Transvaal and Orange Free State entitled the "Imperial Map of South Africa", first published as a thirty-one sheet map in 1900.…
