In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. Blood Meridian is an epic novel of the violence and depravity that attended America's westward expansion, brilliantly subverting the conventions of the Western novel and the mythology of the Wild West. Based on historical events that took place on the Texas-Mexico border in the 1850s, it traces the fortunes of the Kid, a fourteen-year-old Tennesseean who stumbles into a nightmarish world where Indians are being murdered and the market for their scalps is thriving. 'McCarthy's achievement is to establish a new mythology which is as potent and vivid as that of the movies, yet one which has absolutely the opposite effect. He is a great writer" - "Independent". "I have rarely encountered anything as powerful, as unsettling, or as memorable as "Blood Meridian".A nightmare odyssey" - "Evening Standard". "His masterpiece. The book reads like a conflation of the "Inferno", "The Iliad" and "Moby Dick". I can only declare that "Blood Meridian" is unlike anything I have read in recent years, and seems to me an extraordinary, breathtaking achievement" - John Banville. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

"Blood Meridian" was Cormac McCarthy's fifth novel, a dark and bloody western which, though well recieved by some critics, was an immense commercial failure, with fewer than 1,500 selling of a 5,000 book run. However, after the success of McCarthy's "The Border Triolgy", many revisited his older works, "Blood Meridian" in particular gaining immense popularity. Today, "Blood Meridian" is hailed as McCarthy's magnum opus with many considering it one of the greatest American novels ever written. "Blood Meridian" has seen several attempts at a film adaptation since 1995, it's most recent attempt happening in 2023 headed by John Hilcoat, who had previously adapted McCarthy's novel "The Road" 1391938. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Cormac McCarthy's fifth novel, widely considered his masterpiece and among the greatest novels of the 20th century. Octavo, original half cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Anne With Love Cormac." The recipient, Anne DeLisle was McCarthy's second wife. McCarthy published his debut novel, The Orchard Keeper, in 1965, earning the William Faulkner Award for Best First Novel and a Rockefeller Grant. With his grant money, he traveled aboard the Sylvania, where he met singer and dancer Annie DeLisle of The Healy Sisters duo. The two fell in love and married on May 14, 1966, in Annieâs hometown of Hamble, England. Using their combined incomes, the couple traveled through Paris and Geneva before settling on Ibiza, where they joined the islandâs vibrant artistic community. There, McCarthy completed Outer Dark while bonding with fellow novelist Leslie Garrett. In 1967, they returned to the U.S., settling first on a Tennessee farm and later in a restored barn in Louisville, funded by McCarthyâs Guggenheim Fellowship. During this period, McCarthy wrote Suttree and completed Child of God in 1973. Annie recalled these times fondly, despite their modest means, noting McCarthyâs reclusive nature and dedication to his craft. The couple separated in 1976, after which McCarthy moved to El Paso and continued his literary ascent. Blood Meridian (1985) cemented his reputation, and All the Pretty Horses (1991) brought widespread fame, making him one of the most significant writers of the 20th century. Annie stayed in Tennessee, opening Annieâs, a jazz club and gourmet restaurant in Knoxvilleâs Old City in 1983. The venue played a key role in revitalizing the area, offering live music reminiscent of New Orleans. Though Annie moved on in 1989, the restaurant remained a local fixture until 2004. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some light wear and small closed tears to the extremities. Jacket painting: "The Phantom Cart" by Salvador Dali. Jacket design by Richard Adelson. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box by the Harcourt Bindery. Founded over a century ago in 1900, the Harcourt Bindery is the oldest and largest traditional bindery in America exclusively devoted to fine traditional leather bookbinding by hand. An exceptional association copy of the author's profound and significant magnum opus. "Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). "McCarthy can only be compared with our greatest writers, with Melville and Faulkner, and this is his masterpiece" (Michael Herr). While All the Pretty Horses brought McCarthy widespread fame and The Road won him a Pulitzer Prize, Blood Meridian is frequently cited as his magnum opus for its profound complexity and lasting impact on American literature.

In den WarenkorbFirst UK edition, first impression, of this contender for the title of the Great American Novel. McCarthy's shockingly violent work initially sold slowly but was soon proclaimed as among the all-time best works of American literature. Published in 1985, it appeared in the UK four years later. "Blood Meridian comes at the reader like a slap in the face, an affront that asks us to endure a vision of the Old West full of charred human skulls. [It] makes it clear that all along Mr McCarthy has asked us to witness evil not in order to understand it but to affirm its inexplicable reality; his elaborate language invents a world hinged between the real and surreal, jolting us out of complacency" (James). In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "for Al Lowman, all best wishes, Cormac McCarthy". Lowman was a respected Texas historian who spent his life studying and sharing stories of the American Southwest, the setting for McCarthy's most celebrated works, including No Country for Old Men, All the Pretty Horses, and his brutal masterpiece and quintessential Old West novel, Blood Meridian. McCarthy grew up in Tennessee and Appalachia, where many of his early works are set. His first trip to Texas in 1970 inspired him to write Blood Meridian, and in 1974 he moved to El Paso to immerse himself in the history and geography of the region. The subsequent work was "as close to history as novels generally get, drawn in sometimes verbatim tones from memoirs, chronicles, eyewitness testimony" (Mitchell). McCarthy was a notoriously reclusive author, but it is likely he and Lowman met during the course of McCarthy's research. Lowman (1935-2013) curated the special exhibits and catalogues at the Institute of Texan Cultures in San Antonio and served as president of the Texas State Historical Association, the Texas Folklore Society, and the Book Club of Texas. He was a member of the Grolier Club and the Philosophical Society of Texas, and he published a number of book, including Printing Arts in Texas (1975), "the best history of fine printing in Texas" (Jenkins), and This Bitterly Beautiful Land: A Texas Commonplace Book (1972), with an introduction by Carl Hertzog, El Paso's master printer and an internationally renowned book designer. The year before his death, Lowman wrote a love-letter to the Texas of his youth: "My earliest memories are of Aladdin lanterns, battery-powered radios, treadle sewing machines, and mud roads. The fecund black earth extended from our house in all directions. Four hundred years before my time Cabeza de Vaca saw part of Nueces County and described 'vast and handsome pastures, with good grass for cattle. it strikes me the soil would be very fertile were the country inhabited and improved by reasonable people.' Nothing waits more patiently than the earth itself." John Jenkins, Basic Texas Books, 1983; Al Lowman, "Some Recollections of Defining Events", First Timers and Old Timers: the Texas Folklore Society Fire Burns On, 2012; Lee Clark Mitchell, "A Book 'Made Out of Books': the Humanizing Violence of Style in Blood Meridian", Texas Studies in Literature and Language, vol. 57, no. 3, 2015.
