The writer of the book has explored all the avenues which happened during the reign of Bhoja Raja. Inscriptions, tradition, history and literature have all been pressed into service, and unique picture of the main protagonist of Dhara stands out in bold relief against a background of the Eleventh century India which he has succeeded in painting so graphically. This book was to have been only the first a long series of historical studies which the late Professor Ayyangar had contemplated for publication under the auspices of the Annamalai University. But except one memorial to his association with this university, others are not possible due to his untimely demise. The illustrations and maps require a word of explanation. The subject of the book is interesting for the Indian historians. The author has preserved these fine pictures from oblivion, which he considers his duty. About the Author: - Pillaipundagudi Thiruvengadattaiyangar Srinivasa Iyengar (18631931) was an Indian historian, linguist and educationist who wrote books on the history of South India. He served as the Principal of A. V. N. College, Visakhapatnam during the first two decades of the twentieth century. He campaigned to bring changes in the curriculum and introduce spoken dialects. In 1909, he created a Telugu teaching Reform society in order to cultivate vernacular Telugu. In 1911, Iyengar published a textbook of arithmetic called Longman's Arithmethikkulu in modern Telugu. In April 1913, when Madras University appointed a committee to examine and advise them on the style to be adopted for the Telugu composition of the Intermediate Course which replaced the earlier F.A., Iyengar was appointed one of the ten members. About The Author : Tookaram Tatya (also spelled as Tukaram Tatya) (1836-1898) was a cotton commission merchant and active member in the municipal and political affairs of the city of Bombay who became an early, prominent member of the Theosophical Society. On April 9, 1880, Mr. Tatya contacted Col. Olcott and presented an introductory letter from Mr. Martin Wood, editor of the Bombay Review. He was formally admitted into the Theosophical Society the next month, on May 2, and became a trustee of the organization. He established a Bombay Theosophical Publication Fund and published many books in Sanskrit, English, and Marathi, including the literary works of T. Subba Row. One example is the Fund's publication of "Lectures on the Study of the Bhagavad Gita," a series of Subba Row articles originally printed in The Theosophist. Tookaram Tatya also issued it separately under the title of "Discourses on the Bhagavad Gita." First editions, a complete set of the first translation into English of any parts of the Yoga Sutras. The title page of Part II gives a print run of 400 copies, and surviving copies of either book are concentrated institutionally. We cannot trace another set in commerce in recent decades. Ballantyne (1813-1864) was appointed professor of Hindi and Sanskrit at the Scottish Naval and Military Academy, Edinburgh, in 1839 and then recruited by the East India Company to lead Government College, Benares. "As principal (from 1856 also professor of moral philosophy), his task was to bring the Sanskrit students to appreciate European thought and ways without losing the influence among their countrymen which was based on their mastery of the traditional learning of India. His tact, broad-mindedness, and genuine respect for the best in Hindu thought enabled him to succeed by winning their trust" (ODNB). Before Ballantyne, English speakers interested in the sutras were limited to Henry Colebrook's 1823 study, published as part of his series of essays "On the Philosophy of the Hindus". "A decisive event in Yoga scholarship" (Ware), Ballantyne's partial translation in two parts was "designed primarily for his Benares pupils, in which he aimed to adapt the Sanskrit philosophical vocabulary so that it could express European concepts" (ODNB). His rendition was completed in 1881 by Rájendralála Mitra, who worked with him in Benares. Loosely inserted in Part I is a letterpress announcement, printed at the Delhi Gazette Press by Kunniah Lall, offering a £300 prize "for the best refutation of the fundamental errors (opposed to Christian Theism,) of the Vedanta, Nyaya and Sankhya philosophies." Ballantyne won a half share of this prize for his Christianity Contrasted with Hindu Philosophy (1859). The prize was offered by a member of the Bengal Civil Service and judged by representatives of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the bishops of London and Oxford.
