An eccentric gadfly of the left, Woodrow Wyatt had recently had a falling out with the Labour Party weekly Tribune, for which he had written in the past, over his attack on TGWU secretary Frank Cousins. The "snake-dancing" and banzai references relate to the curious demonstrations which had recently caused the cancellation of President Eisenhower's visit to Japan. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961. Bor (1559-1635) was a notary, but he dedicated his life to compiling primary sources, doing historical research, and writing the very detailed, precise and reliable history of the Dutch Revolt during the second half of the sixteenth century. In this edition four supplements (noted on the title-pages) and new registers are added to Bor's chronicle-like account of the Dutch War in 37 "books" in four volumes. The supplements contain even more sources and facts about the period which underline its reputation of the book being the leading work about the subject. The of the four volumes contains a nearly identical engraved frontispiece, with only the indication of the volume revised. The text is enriched by the addition of 80 plates. These include four identical portraits of the author, other portraits of important historical figures and 39 double-page plates of, for example, the siege of Haarlem (1572-73) in volume 1 or the famous plate of a beached whale in volume 4. These plates were produced by Jan Luyken and Romeyn de Hooghe, among others, and the portrait of the Bor is based on a painting by Frans Hals.The bindings of volumes 1 and 2 are a bit more soiled than those of volumes 3 and 4. The spines are slightly damaged from use, without affecting the overall integrity of the binding. Volume 1 are slightly browned, the others only very slightly foxed.
