Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Maggie Caine and her family leave New York to visit the Caine family home, an old farmhouse in Ohio, which her husband has just inherited from a distant aunt. The house, ten miles away from the nearest neighbor, was once owned by a Civil War general reputed to have been a Satanist. But when s…trange and terrible things begin to happen it soon becomes clear that Satanic worship is still alive and well in the community, and so might be the General, who Maggie suspects is taking possession of her teenage son . . .A rediscovered modern horror classic by Thomas Cullinan, author of the twice-filmed Civil War horror novel The Beguiled, The Bedeviled (1978) is an occult chiller whose suspenseful plot and surprising twists will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the shocking finale.'Suspenseful . . . Cullinan does not take the easy way out, and never tries to explain things away by natural causes. The ending is bitter and scary.' - The New York Times'Horror that should keep exorcism fans up all night.' - Publishers Weekly'A good old-fashioned supernatural thriller. A bit of incest, brutal murders and other eerie occurrences all make a heady brew. It's plain and simple scary.' - Memphis Press Scimitar.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition Limited Edition. Octavo. Original publisher's cloth, two-colour foil blocking to front cover. Colour pictorial dust jacket. Ribbon marker. Head and tail bands. Smyth-sewn binding. 312, [i: limitation] pp., illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-wh…ite artwork by Christopher Shy. With facsimile signature by Thomas Cullinan, rare photographs of the author, and reproductions of earlier editions. Introduction by Thomas W. Cullinan. Limited edition, number 32 of 300 copies. Signed by Thomas W. Cullinan and Christopher Shy. Thomas Cullinan occupies a curious position in the history of American popular fiction. His novel The Beguiled a psychological Gothic set during the Civil War, in which a wounded Union soldier takes refuge in a Confederate girls' school with increasingly dark consequences was published in 1966, filmed in 1971 with Clint Eastwood under the direction of Don Siegel, and filmed again in 2017 by Sofia Coppola with Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell. It has never quite left the cultural consciousness. The Bedeviled, published in 1978, is his other significant contribution to the literature of the uncanny: a tale of Satanism, possession, and family horror in which a New York couple inherit an Ohio farmhouse once owned by a Civil War general reputed to have been a Satanist, and discover that his influence has not diminished with his death. The New York Times called it suspenseful, noting that Cullinan never takes the easy way out; Publishers Weekly described it as horror that should keep exorcism fans up all night. It is, in the best tradition of 1970s occult fiction the tradition of The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby a slow-burning and genuinely disquieting piece of work, here presented in Centipede Press's handsome limited edition with new artwork by Christopher Shy, a new introduction by the author's son Thomas W. Cullinan, rare photographs of the author, and reproductions of earlier editions. The edition is now out of print. Fine. Impeccably preserved, free from imperfection and presenting as new. Christopher Shy (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbZustand: Near fine in near fine jacket. dj. First printing. Rare first edition of Cullinan's great American horror novel of familial corruption, self-delusion, and the sins of an undead national history. Like Cullinan's other two great classics, THE BEGUILED and THE BESIEGED, THE BEDEVILED is concerned with Catholicism, the Amer…ican Civil War, and the voices of women; unlike them, it is an unambiguous horror novel set in the modern day. Cullinan uses all the familiar building blocks of genre and era - Satanic masses, justified suspicion of a paternalistic medical establishment, seductive historical hauntings, a peculiarly '70s conception of mental breakdown and psychosis - to construct something ultimately more sinister than Blatty's EXORCIST and deeper than Levin's ROSEMARY'S BABY; in THE BEDEVILED, a crisis of faith is only the first and most elementary horror, with feminism an implicit and necessary question but no answer to great evil. Constantly rediscovered (Valancourt issued it as part of its "Classics" series in 2019 and Centipede reprinted it as a limited edition the following year) but never sufficiently esteemed, THE BEDEVILED is best appraised by Leslie Fiedler, writing (in 1960) without the benefit of having read it: "It is the gothic form that has been most fruitful in the hands of [America's] best writers: the gothic symbolically understood, its machinery and décor translated into metaphors for a terror psychological, social, and metaphysical." 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original black cloth with metallic red-lettered spine. In original unclipped ($10.00) dust jacket by Lydia Rosier. 285, [1] pages. Corners lightly bumped. Previous owner's emboss to front free endpaper. Minor edgewear to jacket. Overall, bright and sound.
