Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Large 8vo. viii+ (2) + pp 9-618 + (2) + (4)pp adverts. 32 engraved plates (including nos. IA and IB), 184 engravings in text, plus numerous large cartouches and head- and tail-pieces. Original decorative green gilt morocco, gilt title on cover and spine, top edge gilt; very slight wear to edges. First edition. The first book devoted entirely to the suburban home in America. It was specifically intended for towns-people of moderate means. J. C. Loudon in England in the 1830s and 1840s, had similarly done much to draw public attention to beautifying the suburbs, Scott however thought Loudon s works too voluminous, too thorough, too English, to meet the needs of American suburban life . Scott s comprehensive work with carefully conceived designs, emphasizes the community aspect - there are designs for neighbouring homes with connecting grounds , he also includes information on varieties and characteristics of trees, shrubs and flowers. The work is dedicated to A. J. Downing, the author s friend and instructor . A very good copy with only occasional faint marginal marks.
