The title page has "Charles Baunscheidt", but the name under the frontispiece is "Carl Baunscheidt" and OCLC lists the author as "Carl Baunscheidt." Carl Baunscheidt [1809-1873] was a German businessman who noticed that his rheumatic hand improved immediately after being bitten by gnats. He came to believe that it was the puncture wounds that allowed the body to heal itself. Baunscheidt invented the Lebenswecker ["life awakener" or Resuscitator] to make minute puncture wounds on the skin. The device consisted of a hollow cylinder of ebony or horn attached to a hollow wooden handle. Twenty two-inch needles were attached to a steel plate, which could be retracted and released through a spring mechanism. The needles perforated the skin to allow a pathogenetic substance to enter the body. He duplicated the gnat fluid as "oleum Baunscheidti", an oil applied with a feather to the skin perforated by the Resuscitator. Baunscheidt denied that his method was acupuncture in disguise. Baunscheidt resettled in the U.S.A. in the 1860s. [see James C. Whorton, "The Wholistic Health Explosion: Acupuncture" in his THE HISTORY OF ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE IN AMERICA, Oxford, 2002].
