First volume comprising a presentation copy inscribed by the author on the title page "für Lisolotte Kühn, Felix Salten, Zch. 31.XII.42". Matching sets of the Bambi books in the original German, comprising later editions, as here, featuring an authorial inscription, are not common. Bambi was originally published in German in 1923 (with an English translation first published in 1928). The sequel, Bambis Kinder, was first published in German in 1940 and, in a much altered version, in English the previous year. The current set is a matching "Kassettenausgabe" slipcase edition, and the first volume is inscribed by the 73 year old author in Zurich. Salten had settled in Switzerland in 1938 after Germany's annexation of Austria. Two works, octavo. Original grey cloth, spines and front covers lettered in brown and green, spines with vignettes in brown, front covers illustrated in brown and green, top edges red. Housed in the publisher's original slipcase. Illustrations in the text of the first vol. Minor marks to cloth, near-fine and attractive copies. Slipcase toned with some minor spots of dampstaining, short closed tears at top edge and slightly worn at extremities, a good example.
