Sutton concerning his receipt of & with comments on Theobald's two pamphlets. 4 pp. autograph letter signed Jan. 14, 1906 from William A. Sutton concerning his version of Manes Verulamiani and Theobald's case against Mrs. Gallup published in Baconiana. 1 pp. autograph note undated signed W. S. criticizing P.W. on Marston & Gallup in his article Bacon & Pope in Baconiana. Pencil notes on the front paste down endpaper indicate "Bacon Society/ From W. Theobald's library/ July 1909 + ?/ Manes Verulamiani p. 140". An old newspaper clipping "Bacon-Shakespeare" is tipped on the front free endpaper. Unlettered contemporary half red cloth & red peb-bled boards. Bristol booksellers ticket on rear paste-down endpaper. Very good with natural wear to edges & extremities. Contents as originally assembled. W. Theobald, (William), 1829-1908, was a mala-cologist and naturalist on the staff of the Geological Survey of India. In addition to several publications in his scientific field he was a contributor to Baconiana & the author of On the authorship of the sonnets attributed to Shakespeare, an inquiry into the claims that Bacon, Sir Philip Sidney, and others are their author.
