Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong quarto. Measuring 14" x 9½". Handmade folk art album made of a canvas airplane wing. Contains 85 sepia-toned or black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 8" x 10", some with captions. Very good album with some stickiness from the use of canvas with very good photographs. A World War I-era aviation album handmade with "dope" or canvas from an airplane wing that has been lacquered and compiled by Harold E. Shugart beginning in 1918. The album follows his training at the U.S. School of Military Aeronautics in Champaign, Illinois and later University of Texas, Austin. A large photo shows the Kelly Field Glee Club posed on the back of a truck. Other air fields featured here are McKinney and Love in Texas and Preith and Eberts Fields in Arkansas. Shugart includes numerous well-shot aerial photographs including one of a pilot performing a trick and climbing out of his seat. Others show pilots and mechanics posed on base, planes flying overhead, and plane inspections. Various crashes are featured throughout with planes sticking out of buildings and trees. Additionally included are vaccination records, identification cards, furlough cards, a graduation from the School of Aeronautics certificate, and an aeronautical map of Texas. According to historian Rebecca Cameron, "during World War I, approximately 23,000 volunteers entered flying cadet training. Eight private and state universities offered preflight (ground school) training," this included the University of Texas where Shugart attended. Once they completed the ground training program they were then sent to flight school. Cameron notes, "the aspiring pilot needed six to eight weeks, including forty to fifty hours of flying time, to earn his wings." A wonderful album that documents a firsthand account of World War I-era flight training housed in a unique, handmade album.

Contemporary photo album in leather binding. More than 210 black and white photos, the majority captioned with typewritten labels. Picture size varies, the majority are 65 × 90 mm; some are up to 180 × 130 mm. . 19 album card leaves with photographs (and 5 blank). 13 unpublished photos of Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis, Senegal, and a photo of Anita Conti, the pioneer French female oceanographer. Interesting private photo album of a French Colonial commissioner in Africa (Mr. Moiret), with more than 210 contemporary black and white photographs taken mostly in French West Africa. Among them thirteen unpublished photos of the aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis; an inscribed photo of Anita Conti the first French female oceanographer; an original photograph of a Senegalese woman used as the illustration of a noted local postal stamp in 1938; besides several images of different aircraft, and various colonial themes. The album starts with thirteen hitherto unknown images of Amelia Earhart taken in Saint-Louis, Senegal (French West Africa) on June 8, 1937, after setting a 13 hours and 22 minutes time record for the 1,900 miles of the eastward South Atlantic crossing from Natal, Brazil to the coasts of West Africa, part of her ill-fated second attempt of circumnavigational flight. Due to navigational errors and the weather circumstances on their South Atlantic crossing from Brazil, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan missed Dakar, their original destination in West Africa, and landed eventually some one hundred miles to the north in Saint-Louis, Senegal on June 7, 1937. As the arrival to this city was unexpected there was no official press coverage, only amateur photos were taken by the few local French officers who greeted the aviators. Besides the present ones, we couldn't find any other photographic records of Amelia Earhart in Saint-Louis. The photos were taken in the morning on June 8, before Earhart's flight forward to Dakar, showing the aviation pioneer in short sleeve checkered shirt around her twin-motored Lockheed (Model 10E) Electra, and the local French officers. Another important piece of the album is Anita Conti's inscribed portrait. This is the only colored picture of the collection, and it shows the first French female oceanographer with a huge manta ray hanging next to her in a fishing net, among local people in a fishing port. The picture is inscribed in ink: "Pour M. le Commissaire Moiret en grande sympathie Anita Conti 1949". The album contains a copy of the photo picturing a half-naked Senegalese woman, wearing necklaces, and head-carrying a large pot, which image was used as the model of the illustration for a series of Senegales postal stamps published in 1938. The rest of the album consists of images of the funeral of the victims of an aerial accident of the Béarn squadron at Kayes; several pictures of various aircraft; visits of important French colonial officials and a minister: Colonel Jean-Baptiste Marchand(?), Louis Lefebvre (Governor of Senegal) Boresy (commissioner), and Marius Moutet (Minister of the Colonies); lion hunting; different pictures from Saint-Louis, Ziguinchor, Dakar, Pastoria, Kindia, Louga and Kaolack; an explosion of gasoline barrels in Conakry in 1948; and some pictures of Commissioner Moiret and his wife at their home and garden. One photo was removed. Otherwise in fine condition. Contemporary photo album in leather binding. More than 210 black and white photos, the majority captioned with typewritten labels. Picture size varies, the majority are 65 × 90 mm; some are up to 180 × 130 mm.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7.5". String tied decorative cloth with palm tress and "aloha" on the front board. Contains 244 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 4" x 5" without captions. Album is near fine with some edgewear with near fine photographs. A photo album kept by a young couple in Hawaii in the 1930s and 40s. Warren A. Gaboury was a naval pilot from Rhode Island who, according to a newspaper clipping seen here, "dropped his naval wings to work for Pan-American Airlines." The photos show Gaboury and his wife exploring the Hawaiian Islands, enjoying the beach, posed by palm trees, and swimming at a local pool. They are often seen posed around cars and motorcycles as well as visiting a downtown area. They go to an air show and many photos show the couple standing by planes. Some of these photos show photos taken while in flight of planes and landscapes. Later photos show the couple at a ranch and enjoying Gaboury is also seen in his military uniform throughout the album. A newspaper clipping laid in discusses Gaboury's career mentioning how, as stated above, he began as a naval pilot and switched courses to become a commercial pilot of the San Francisco-China run. The article goes on to say, "he likes the pounding surf and therefore has passed up several opportunities to fly for airlines which operate over hill and dale in order to turn his attention to the development of trans-oceanic aerial travel." While commissioned with the Navy he was "assigned to an aerial photographic survey which took him and four companions along the âLine Islands' from Hawaii to Samoa." This was presumably where his interest in photography developed. The article ends saying that next to flying the "subject dearest to his heart is Hawaii" where he had taken up residency. "By the time one listens to his discourse on the beauties of the "Pacific Paradise," he reaches the opinion that [Gaboury] might well qualify for a berth as unofficial representative of the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce." A nice collection of photographs depicting a couple in Hawaii and Gaboury's aviation career.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong folio. Measuring 16½ "x 12½". String tied, black leather boards with embossed and gilt decorations. Contains 270 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 3" x 2" and 10" x 8". The front board and some pages are detached but present with bumped corners, very good with fine photographs. A young couple's photo album of their wedding and the husband's time in the air force circa 1950. Marjorie and Floyd Haskell married before Floyd left to join the air force and much of the album portrays his love for aviation. The first several pages are dedicated to the couple's wedding day with pictures of Marjorie in her dress and getting ready as well as photos of the family members and friends who attended. Much of the photo album after that is of Floyd dressed in uniform posing by army jets and smiling at an Aviation base near Keene, New York. Jets, airplanes, and biplanes are all pictured in the album with different designs and embellishments painted onto the bodies of the planes. Some include pin-up designs and there are pin-up photos later in the album of women in tropical themed outfits. Most of the photos show the full profile of the plane, with shots of the interior cockpit. A couple are aerial shots taken by Haskell while he is piloting his own plane in the air. These include shots of the landscape below, giving a birds-eye view of farms and army bases. Haskell's other company members are included in pictures, some of which are women in uniform at the aviation base. A couple pages are devoted to newspaper cut outs and pictures of a plane crash in which Marcy Airfield's plane instructor, Forrest Cook, crashed and was fatally wounded. Another cut out shows an almost fatal accident during an air show where the pilot was able to parachute to safety. There are photographs of the plane before it had crashed and some of the rubble left over included in the album as well. A few pages show Haskell flying a plane and doing tricks in the air as well as plane acrobatics doing stunts in the sky. Later parts of the album show the Haskell children playing together, dressing up, and growing into older children. An intriguing album filled with aviation photographs from the ground and inside the cockpit taken circa 1950.

Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 11" x 7.5". String tied, black leather over flexible paper boards with "photographs" embossed on the front cover. Contains 344 black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1" x 0.5" and 5.5" x 3.5" with captions. Light edgewear with strip of paper affixed to the front cover, else near fine. A photo album beginning in 1925 and continuing through the early 1930s from Fort Myers, Florida and North Carolina compiled by Donald E. Hawkins. The album is well captioned beginning with an inscription about the album, "This volume of photographs is dedicated to the joys and sorrows of my youth and those of my intimate friends". There are a couple pictures of the fort base but most of the pictures are of Hawkins and his young friends going to the beach, fishing, and traveling around in their "Trusty Lincoln" to places in the United States and Canada. A few of the photographs have been torn into different shapes, purposefully. Some of the places the group visited were Louisville, Baltimore, Gettysburg, and a few unlabeled areas in Canada. There are also several pages of pictures from the men heading to Crescent Beach, Florida. The beach pictures are humorous featuring shots of the men standing on each other's shoulders, "Those D!!!?! Fools"; Singing and playing a ukulele, "Sweet Adeline"; Spanking another man bent down on all fours, "Just Punishment"; a shot of one of the men without swim trunks, "Oh Gene has lost his pants! Ladies don't look"; and many more. Hawkins also writes about his main hobby, aviation. One of the photos reads, "The most thrilling sport in the world and this is one of my planes built by myself," and several pages featuring planes with a few of them in the process of being built. There are also car wreck photos that Hawkins was involved with, "Four views of that awful wreck with a Wills-ST-Claire roadster, no one was killed but Ralph Hawkin (no relation) has his chest crushed". A predominant amount of the photographs are of the different girls Hawkins dated. Some of the girls are named but the later few are not. Two of his girlfriends Miss Glennie Coman and Miss Francis McTeer are seen the most. However, in the beginning of the book he is pictured with a young girl, Ada Lee, "Apple of my eye" written below the picture. In a series of photographs with him standing next to Ada is, "One of my fill in dates back in '25. I've quit fillin' in now," and another, "You can bet your life this is no fill in". However, written some time after "(We are divorced now)," is written under the caption. An aesthetically pleasing album filled with joyful photographs from a young man stationed in Florida during the late 1920s through to the early 1930s.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong small quarto measuring 11" x 7". Brad-bound red paper boards with silver stamped decorations. Contains 71 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 7" x 9.5" with captions. A photo album kept by Californian, Hugo Steigman, a World War II veteran and pilot while he was involved with air shows and aviation teaching schools just after the war. The album begins with this note by Steigman, "the majority of these pictures were taken at N.A.S. Livermore and old Navy Primary Training base - Fearman's were used by the air cadets there. A.R. McCarty leased the base for glider operations and a school, âThe Rossart Soaring and Gliding School.' These pictures show some of the growth of the school from one plane and glider he taught me to fly and later used me as an instructor. During the summer vacation in 1947 I spent over two solid months living and working at the school. This was without pay. His financial struggles are a monument to the fumbling business man. The jeep served its purpose admirably. It hauled people, gliders, cars, hanger doors, dirt scrapers, scrapers, planes, and did innumerable jobs. "Betty earned her beep." I began flying gliders around late February of 1947 and intend to continue indefinitely." Following this Steigman includes photographs of planes with captions detailing the make and model of each. Other photos include views of the base from the air, the infamous jeep, and photos of his future wife posed on a landing strip. Also included are certificates earned by Steigman including his pilot's license, school bus driver certificate, Boy Scouts of America Scoutmaster card, and his membership card to the Soaring Society of America. According to his obituary he was a "lifetime member of the Order of Daedalians (the national fraternity of military pilots)." A nice collection of aviation photography following an airman's post-war career.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Oblong quarto. Measuring 13.25" x 10.5". Screwbound leather board with two decorative gilt stripes. Contains 62 gelatin silver photographs measuring 4.5" x 2.75" and 10" x 8". The original album appears to have perished and the photos were placed in this album; the assembler has taken care to photocopy the caption on the back of images and tipped them beside the photos. Near fine with light wear at the edges and light staining to a few internal photographs. An assortment of aviation photographs from the mid-1920s to about 1930. Most notable is a photo of Amelia Earhart with Wilmer "Bill" Stultz, and aviation manufacturer Anthony Fokker, upon their return from a transatlantic flight on Fokker's tri-motor aircraft piloted by Stutz and Louis Gordon in 1928; and two images of Fokker standing by a sea plane and inspecting the prop on an aircraft. Other images show planes in front of the Fair Child Flying Corp. hanger in New York, a pilot posed in front of the Fox Movietone News plane, and 19 photos in and around Rio de Janero in 1929, including shots of Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Fokker Super Universal pontoon plane being towed out of the Guanabara Bay, shots of Rio from the air, as well a four images of the Super Universal in Argentina at an airfield and in the air. A promotional photo album for the Kohler Aviation Corporation in the 1920s. The images detail the airfield, landing planes, aerial views, and personnel. One photo shows well-dressed passengers posed ascending into the plane. Another image shows mechanics and pilots posed in front of a large bi-plane. The corporation was based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and often flew across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin, ferrying passengers in Loening Amphibian Airplanes, seen throughout the album. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong folio. Measuring 14 "x 11". Black boards with gilt decorations. Contains 57 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 1" and 5" x 4", with captions and some negatives. Edgewear, a small indent on the front board, and bumped corners, thus very good album with near fine photographs. A young couple's photo album featuring photographs of their wedding and life together. Beverly Keister and Loren Robert Holland were married in the 1940s during a Twelfth Night Ceremony, which is celebrated on the 5th of January 12 days after Christmas. Pictures of the event are in the first part of the album showing Keister receiving gifts and spending times with friend and family. Holland flew jets for the United States Air Force in World War II and many photographs show the air crafts as well as pictures of the landscape from within the cockpit. One picture shows the full interior of the jet that Holland was piloting as well as shots of other planes flying next to Holland's. There are also pictures of Holland while he was at the aviation base playing on both the boxing and basketball team. A few of the photographs show young children, presumably the couple's children greeting Holland, who is wearing a Groucho Marks mask. Another funny photo shows Holland holding and caring for his peculiar pets, a raccoon and a monkey. An interesting photo album of a young couple marrying before the husband went off to fight in World War II.
