Ecclesfield, Feb. 27, 1864. 1 sheet of blue paper, 110 x 190 mm, folded once, written over two pages and signed by Juliana Horatia Gatty. With a folded cream bifolium of a poem and two ink sketches, inserted and fixed to the rear page. Old folds, mounting residue to the last page, pin hole loss to last page not affecting sketch. The letter by children's writer Juliana Ewing, to Miss Woodall, concerns the commissioning of an engraved seal, specifying onyx or cornelian and giving instructions as to size and shape, referring to an enclosed sketch. The inserted bifolium contains two pen-and-ink drawings with accompanying manuscript verses. The poem is about ladies that lose one of their group, who then springs up out of a box, to their shock and surprise. The drawings illustrate the poem, showing a group gathered around playing croquet and then shocked as the girl pops out of a box. The letter is written by Ewing; the drawings and verse either Ewing or one of her sisters. Signed by Author(s).

Very Good (usual mailing folds, little browning right-edge of letter's second page). Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on a folded, four-page sheet of stationery from the St. Botolph Club, Boston, dated April 9, 1925. To ?Mr. Langfeld?: Merwin thanks Langfeld for his letter and review. ?It is a pleasant relief to be handled by a reviewer who has really taken the pains to read one?s work and write of it with background.? He writes about no reviews picking up on his theme of ?The Moment Of Beauty,? which he says ?is the dominant moment.? He writes how he tries to represent the ?people of the theatre as not is in the familiar sensational way but as intelligent, sensitive human beings working hard in a field where the difficulties are little short of in sufferable. And in this book I have tried to show some of them as I have seen them and lived around with them- essentially decent folks, artists, soberly fighting it out.? About more and then thanks Langfeld for his ?careful handling you gave the book is what we meet with all too seldom. I am grateful for it. Yours faithfully, Samuel Merwin.? Samuel Merwin, Sr. [1874?1936] was an American author and playwright, writing about 30 works. Between 1905 and 1911, he worked as associate editor and then editor of SUCCESS magazine. In 1907 the magazine sent him to China to investigate the opium trade. He died of a stroke while dining at The Player's Club in Manhattan on Oct. 17, 1936. Signed.

unbound. Handwritten note on personal stationery from Charlie Rose to Washington Post columnist Tom Shales. Date unknown. Charles Peete Rose Jr. is an American journalist and talk show host. From 1991 to 2017, he was the host and executive producer of the talk show Charlie Rose on PBS and Bloomberg LP. On the show, he interviewed writers, politicians, athletes, entertainers, businesspersons, leaders, scientists, intellectuals, and fellow journalists. The show was known for its distinguished stature and intellectual tone. This is a new item from the collection of Television critic Tom Shales (1944 - 2024). Shales was an incisively funny Washington Post columnist, he earned the nickname Terrible Tom and had the clout to make or break shows. Shales won the Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1988. During his three-decade career those in the industry considered him both a kingmaker and a high executioner in an era when network television's hold on American culture was at it's peak. Time magazine called him "brilliant, thoughtful, incisive and screamingly funny.also, vicious, infuriating, cruel and unfair". His thrice-weekly Washington Post TV column, 'On the Air,' syndicated in 59 other newspapers. The Tom Shales collection includes letters, cards and correspondence from celebrated television and entertainment legends, newscasters and politicians, including letters from Norman Lear, David Letterman, Johnny Carson, Conan O'Brien, Garry Shandling, Fred Rogers, Carol Burnett, David Brinkley, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, Edward Kennedy, Nancy Reagan and many more. Letters. Fine group of letters from Lewis SIGNED in full to critic Selden Rodman. Two of the letters are brief social exchanges. Another is a two-page typed letter dated 22 October 1930 from Vermont. In part: "I'm delighted by the HARKNESS HOOT [Yale University campus magazine co-founded by Rodman in 1930]. I'm sure that whether it lives to be a grand old Etruscan ruin like the LIT. [THE YALE LITERARY MAGAZINE, the oldest literary magazine in the United States], or whether it lasts only a few years, it will have an -- no, I won't say an 'enlivening' but rather, a maturing effect on the (decreasingly) immature mind of Yale. I was once on the LIT.; I know what your revolt must have been." Lewis then expounds on co-founder William Harlan Hale's essay in the first number of the magazine, "Twenty or Over," saying that he thinks Hale "is wrong in saying that 'the literary movement begun a decade ago by Lewis, Dreiser, Anderson, and Mencken.a movement of disillusioned intellectuals.its spiritual father was the war.' In the first place, Mencken and Dreiser or Anderson and Lewis have about as little in common as Cabell and Willa Cather. In the second place, I don't think the war was the spiritual father of any of these -- certainly it wasn't of Dreiser. His SISTER CARRIE was published, first, thirty years ago, in 1900! -- and it is characteristic of all his work." The one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER, from Austria, dated 9 December [1932], regards Rodman's initiating the magazine COMMON SENSE. In full: "Good luck to your magazine. But I haven't much optimism for it. I have seen far too many new periodicals started of late. And I don't see anything in your program that won't, between them, already be covered by NATION, NEW REPUBLIC, + NEW MASSES. But I shall be delighted if you prove me wrong." Accompanied by two envelopes hand addressed by Lewis. Selden Rodman was a prolific writer of creative and critical works, an editor of several important anthologies, and a co-editor of the socialist magazine COMMON SENSE. We in years past had a collection of letters from Robert Lowell to Rodman that also showed signs of surviving a fire. Both long letters are scorched in the margins to varying degrees, the handwritten one with some loss of letters. Both envelopes are also scorched. Condition ranges from Fair to Near Fine.

Letter. AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED of 4 pages. About personal matters but primarily concerned with making corrections in an interview eventually published in the WEBSTER REVIEW in 1985. Adams mentions Kipling, Dickens, Trollope, and others, as well as his being president of the British Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Regarding his WATERSHIP DOWN and a character from De la Mare's THE THREE MULLA-MULGARS, Adams says, "Nod & Fiver are similar in remaining weak, but in developing authority as their story develops. I did not say that Fiver's vision of man derived from the Nod-Andy Battle episode." Along with a copy of the magazine containing the interview, copies of the interviewer's letters to Adams, and two copies of the manuscript of the interview--one the final copy and the other with some questions and answers not used in the final version. Crease marks from folding. With original envelope. Near Fine.
