Lacking frontispiece portrait. First (American) edition. First (American) edition. Lacking frontispiece portrait. Mary Anne (Thompson) Clarke (1776-1852) was the mistress of Frederick, Duke of York. She became his mistress in 1803, while he was Commander-in-Chief of the Army. In 1809 it was discovered that she had been selling army commissions, causing a national scandal, leading to York's resignation; he was later exonerated and reinstated. Mrs. Clarke was prosecuted for libel in 1813 and imprisoned, and she later moved to France. She is also the author of a book of memoirs, and 'A Letter Addressed to the Right Honourable William Fitzgerald.'. Unprinted front wrapper is detached and a bit chipped, but present. Lacking fragile spine (but original delicate sewn binding intact], moderate early soiling and browning to both covers, text is uniformly tanned, else a good to very good copy.

Largely a narrative of facts on this particular exchange of prisoners at this particular British prison, involving among others, Benedict Arnold. ".Arnold stationed Bedel of New Hampshire, with about four hundred men and two cannon, at the narrow pass of the Cedars. This pass was but fifteen leagues above Montreal, and [Gen.] Thomas, at Sorel, was but as many leagues distant below . The detachment from Detroit under Captain Forster, . appeared in sight of the Cedars . Butterfield [to whom Bedel had abandoned the command] surrendered himself and his garrison prisoners at discretion . Arnold moved, to recover the captives, by force; but as the British officer declared that a massacre of the prisoners, 474 in number, would be the inevitable consequence of an attack, he consented to obtain the release of them all, except four captains who were retained as hostages, by promising the return of an equal number of British prisoners. The engagement led to mutual criminations; the justification of the breach of one treaty by the neglect of another." (Bancroft) Congress had refused to ratify the exchange on the grounds that American prisoners had been maltreated by the captors. This collection of testimonies by British officers attempts to refute the American charges of British cruelty. Howes A412. [and] ".are intended to shew the fallacy of the report of the Congress, and to evince the perfidy of that body, in the resolves. -- M.R." (Sabin 2451). During the American invasion, the Americans briefly held Montreal which was commanded by Colonel Moses Hazen. Because of concerns about British activity to the west, Hazen sent 400 troops commanded by Colonel Timothy Bedel of Bedel's Regiment to occupy the Cedars. The command of the American garrison at Montreal was temporarily taken up by Hazen while Colonel Benedict Arnold traveled northward to join Brigadier General John Thomas' troops. Reports of British activity to the west caused Hazen to order Bedel and a 400-man force to defend The Cedars. The post was on the St. Lawrence River, 30 miles west of Montreal.

In den WarenkorbSECOND EDITION, portrait frontispiece to first volume signed by the author, the odd spot, largely restricted to borders, whereto some occasional browning also, pp. 216; [i], 362, foolscap 8vo, contemporary half chestnut morocco with maroon cloth sides, backstrips lettered in gilt, some light fading and gentle wear, marbled edges, traces of label removal from pastedowns, good. Laid in to the first volume is an autograph letter from Daphne du Maurier, dated January 26 1937, returning these books (the recipient addressed only as 'Dear Madam'). Du Maurier explains that 'My Mother has a copy of "The Rival Princes" in her possession, which I read before writing "The du Mauriers", therefore I return the two volumes to you'. The letter is on paper headed to Greyfriars in Church Crookham she was at this point engaged in completing 'Rebecca', having recently moved back from Egypt. The author of this book was an ancestor of du Maurier's, her great-great-grandmother, about whom she would later write the novel Mary Anne. Mary Anne Clarke was the Duke of York's mistress. Her influence over him was very great, and said to extend to advising him on the disposition of his considerable patronage. In 1809 eight charges of wrongful use of his patronage were brought against the Duke, which although not proven, forced (for a short period) his resignation as commander-in-chief. Clarke figured prominently in the trial, and subsequently published the present work which contains a remarkably free account of the state of relations between the two royal Dukes, York and Kent, and an attack on the instigators of the investigation. An erratum at the close of the first volume corrects 'public birth' to 'public mirth' as the thing that was occurring on the drawing-room carpets there mentioned.
