8vo. pp. 334, [blank leaf], 10(ads). with half-title. 4 etched plates by Samuel Lover. Uncut in modern buckram (some slight foxing, chips in outer margin of 2 leaves). First Edition of this entertaining collection of letters from Upper Canada, 1831-33, written by various members of the Magrath and Radcliff families to their relative, the Rev. Thomas Radcliff in Dublin. They present a view of immigrant life from the perspective of the more affluent and better educated. The Magrath family emigrated from Ireland in 1827, and settled at Erindale, near York, while the Radcliff's came out in 1833 and settled in Adelaide township (near London). The final chapters describe deer, bear, partridge and duck hunting as well as trout fishing. Also included are two humorous fictitious letters, attributed to a Bridget Lacy, one of the family maids. Gagnon I 2215. Kingsford p. 86. Lande 1955. Morgan p. 245. Sabin 43846. Story pp. 611-12. TPL 1790.
