Vintage Australian insert poster for the 1971 US film. Printed by Robert Burton Pty., in Sydney. Based on screenwriter Larner's 1964 novel. Nominated for the Palme d'Or, and a key film in the BBS Productions cycle of the early 1970s, as well as a New Hollywood film, albeit lesser-known. Hector (Tepper) plays college basketball superbly, but his lover, Olive (Black), has reservations about their relationship. All the while, Hector's friend Gabriel (Margotta) contemplates and protests the Vietnam War. Nicholson's directorial debut, after astonishing performances in "Easy Rider" (1969) and "Five Easy Pieces" (1970). Shot on location at the University of Oregon and throughout the state. 12.75 x 30 inches, folded twice as issued. Very Good plus, with light toning, brief edge creasing, and a few central tears. OCLC lists one example of another poster by Strobridge featuring Sherman, "Frank W. Sanger's Company supporting John F. Sheridan in Mrs. Bridget O'Brien Esq.", at the Library of Congress. There are, however, no examples listed of the present poster.Sheridan was born in America and got his start on the stage at Providence, Rhode Island in pantomime as a widow named Mulvaney. His best-known character was "Widow O'Brien" in Fun on the Bristol, a musical farce written by George Fawcett Rowe, and first produced at Newport, Rhode Island, but was heavily criticised. It was developed by E. E. Rice in New York, finally making 14th Street theatres in 1880, and was taken to London just as Nellie Stewart's Rainbow Revels was opening at the same theatre.Sheridan and his play were brought to Australia in 1884 by Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove. Later successes include the opera The Earl and the Girl, in which he was associated with Miss Heba Harlow, also A Trip to Chicago (written jointly by Sheridan and Fred Lyster), as "Johanna Murphy"[ and Dion Boucicault's The Shaughraun.He died of heart failure in the early hours of Boxing Day at the Criterion Hotel, Newcastle, in which city he was due to appear in Cinderella for William Anderson that night. He had been suffering poor health for a long period, and had recently lost a fortune when a financial institution, in which he had invested heavily, failed, His remains were interred in the Waverley Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia. The impressive printing block measures 565 mm long, between 130 and 190 mm high, and 22 mm deep. We know nothing definite about it, but suggest it could date from the late nineteenth century; we presume it to be of Australian origin (we discovered it here in Adelaide over 35 years ago, and only recently rediscovered it in storage). Any attempt at description falls far short of the wood carving itself.…
