Dan Burne Jones bibliographer for the artist Rockwell Kent writes to Stephen J Janokowski about books being "purposely" "overlooked in the compiling of a bibliography." The tone of the letter reveals Jones's impatience with the inquiry. Jones's The Prints of Rockwell Kent: A Catalogue Raisonne only lists Kent's best-known wood cuts, lithographs and prints. The missing entry is that of "Pushkin's works which has a covere [sic] design by Rockwell Kent!" for which Jones provides an alternate reference and goes on to add that "[t]hese types of bibliographies are not complete." Signed, Dan Burne Jones. He adds a handwritten postscript: "Enclosed is a copy of our bookplate done by R. K. and one I did which for [sic] the XVII Meeting of the International Ex Libris Society held in Lugano Switzerland in 1975." No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Although not dated or addressed to anyone by name, this letter is almost certainly a follow-up to a March 1, 1921, letter that Fred Wagner sent to Mr. Folsom in New York City - Arthur H. Folsom was the owner of Folsom Galleries at the time, dedicated to impressionist and other "modern" styles of art. Wagner writes here, "Some time ago I sent a Box with Pastels and Water Colors, to have you look over them, with the view of your selecting some to Exhibit for sale. I hope they arrived safely and met with your favor. hoping to hear from you I remain yours Truly, Fred Wagner." Written on a single page of Philadelphia Sketch Club letterhead, which measures approximately 8.5" x 5.5". Wagner was a member of the Sketch Club for more than 40 years, and was its Vice President in 1923. The signature is very clearly written. Frederick R. Wagner (1860-1940) was an American impressionist painter and pastel artist. From suburban Philadelphia, he began studying with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1878. He began teaching just four years later, and exhibited his artwork throughout his life. Among the most notable of his showings, he had two paintings in 1913's Armory Show in New York - considered to be the first major exhibition of Modern Art in the US. Condition: Has a small hole that does not affect the text - most likely from a letter spike. Otherwise in very good condition and easy to display, with nice art content. Signed by Author(s).

In this two-page autograph letter signed Frost writes in part: "I send you. the copy of the Bull Calf sent me last week: I did not write in the fly leaf as you suggested because I couldn't think of anything to caricature. I wanted to make something appropriate but I couldn't hit on just the thing. So I put in a little drawing that was made for the book. It is not the original of the one in the book, but one I laid aside and is better than the one in the book: If Mr. Wilson does not like the drawing inserted as it is [??] better than anything I could have done offhand. But be sure to tell him that if he wants one on the fly leaf to tear this one out and keep it and send me the book and I will do another. I'm not writing in my usual beautiful Spencerian hand this evening: I've been sawing ice all the afternoon, helping to fill the ice house and my paw is stiff: Farmers have a hard, cold life". [The Monvel article was published in The Century, 1894.] The letter reads, "I return proof of the Monvel article. I had made reference to several drawings which have not been reproduced and of these I have only marked in the proof one to be omitted. The drawings reproduced serve to explain themselves and the mention made of the other may stimulate curiosity to know more of the books. It would seem better in the arrangement of the pages to have my portrait of Monvel nearer the first pages of the article and substitute his portrait of a young girl in the place you have given mine. No Binding. Zustand: Good. This charming letter to friends humorously announces the birth of Weber's second child. He writes in full: "Dear Leonard and Adah:- I am pleased to inform you that Frances gave birth to a lovely baby-girl last Friday at her mother's home in Trenton. The child-infant was so eager to see the light that she did not wait for the leadership of a scientist-doctor, who came, however, a half hour too late for him to officiate as "deliverer". Only the menial duties were left to him. And the kiddy was so clever as to dodge the "portals" of the confinement hospital. She doesn't believe in ordinary precincts or banal environment. An individualist from the first moment. And strange isn't it, that this little one was born on the very day and hour her brother was born -- four years ago. With best wishes to you from Frances and myself. I am with love to you both Max / Frances and baby are doing well." Max Weber (1881-1961) studied and/or associated with a host of 20th century's major artists--beginning with Arthur Wesley Dow in the U.S. and, in Paris, Henri Matisse, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, etc. He is widely credited with introducing Cubism to America.
