Der Die Seiten sind sauber. - - "In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Euro-Americans created images of Polynes…ians the bloodthirsty savage, the dying savage, Primitive Man, the children of Eden and collected and displayed objects which corroborated these views. Some of these classic Polynesian objects are presented here: the celebrated 'u'u club of the Marquesans, the Maori tiki, Tahitian adzes. As we continue in the twentieth century to revise and create images of Polynesians, not only do we imbue these objects with new meaning, but we include other objects as illustrations. Not long ago, several of the objects presented here would not have been seen as classic (truly) Polynesian art: the Marquesan carved bowl, the late nineteenth century Maori door jamb figure, the Niuean poncho. The Polynesians also participated in the creation of these cultural images, in their selection of objects to trade and in the development of new types: the Austral carved paddles, the Mangaian adze. L. Massard's watercolor Nomahanna and the Maori cane handle (back cover) illustrate these processes of selection and manipulation in the creation of cultural images. We assume that the watercolor was drawn from life, for there is an affecting immediacy to Nomahanna's gaze, an authority in the carefully observed costume. In fact, Massard did not accompany Kotzebue's Pacific voyage and never met Nomahanna. He has blended verbal and pictorial images to render the essence of Nomahanna according to the European view. Nomahanna wears a sailor's shoes not because she wore them with this blue dress and flower garland - she did not - but because Kotzebue himself was fascinated by the size of her feet and discussed her shoes at great length when describing another encounter with her."
