Upwards of 200 pieces of manuscript material, including 7 calf bound pocket notebooks, several of which are disbound due to deterioration of the bindings; legal and patent documentation; and numerous pieces of correspondence to and from both Seth Adams, and John Barbour, detailing the complex processes, and emotional components, involved in bringing the Nervine Asylum into being. Correspondence and documentation all in very good condition or better, with the pocket noteboooks being thoroughly legible but in need of stabilization. Seth Adams was a Boston based inventor and businessman, prominent in local affairs, and at the time of his death in 1873 was in possession of a $1.5 million estate, a portion of which was required to go towards the building and upkeep of the Adams Nervine Asylum. Adams started out with his brother Isaac, manufacturing printing presses and equipment, before purchasing a sugar refinery and becoming one of the largest sugar producers on the East coast. On the occasion of Adams' death his estate passed into the custodianship of John Barbour, a highly respected Boston lawyer and former supervisor of the Boston Internal Revenue. Barbour was known for being meticulous and scrupulous in his dealings ("You will hear that he makes trouble, but not from honest men.") but clearly several of the recipients and interested parties in Adams' last will and testament (included here) felt that he moved too slowly, and suspected him of using the extensive fortune to feather his own nest. Several attempts were made to appoint someone less rigid as overseer, but Barbour remained in control of the execution of the bequest and ultimately succeeded in bringing the Nervine Asylum project to fruition. The majority of the projected works, monuments etc. were not completed until a decade after Adams' death, the asylum itself didn't open its doors for patients until 1880. The archive contains upwards of 200 pieces including Adams' will, court documents detailing probate and giving accounts of disbursement etc.; itemized records of Adams holdings, business interests, and considerable fortune, and the deceased's wishes for these assets. Detailed reports of all of Barbour's dealing with Adams, the family, and the executors, the extensive work he undertook for the estate after Adams died, and an account of the difficulties involved in consolidating Adams' rather far flung holdings, including a fascinating sheaf of material dealing with the securing of a patent for a brass pressure valve of Adams' design and creation. The archive additionally holds letters of complaint from the unhappy relatives, Barbour's rebuttals of their accusations, and all the of the required court rulings and documentation dealing with changing executors and the establishment of the Nervine Asylum. Other subgroupings of documentation present include patent material, a file of correspondence including drawings and pricing proposals for the monument to be erected at Adams' grave site, and a grouping of documents from Barbour's earlier career including dealings with revenue detectives, tax investigations, and renegade distillers of alcohol. The Asylum was incorporated in 1877 and opened in 1880. The purchase of the Jamaica Plain estate of J. Gardiner Weld, a commercial merchant who died c. 1876 prior to inhabiting his new mansion, was made possible by Seth Adams bequeathing $600,000 for the establishment of a curative institution for the benefit of "indigent, debilitated, and nervous people" specifying that the inmates be residents of the state with mental issues, but who could not be designated "insane". The endowment also allowed for patients who were not residents of the Commonwealth of Massachussetts "on payment of reasonable compensation for such treatment, the same to be determined by its managers." The Nervine Asylum was designed and maintained as a step far above that of the run of the mill 'lunatic asylum'; steam powered central heating, private rooms, hot and cold water bathrooms, eighteen acres of grounds with vegetable gardens and a small farm. The patient body, at least into the 1880's consisted exclusively of women, most of whom would have been considered "genteel", with an average stay of 6 months or so, with counseling treatment, "teaching" courses which would probably correspond to a form of therapy, and the now rather controversial use of electro-shock treatment, with a special facility devoted to its use: "Talking of Electricity reminds us of the afore-mentioned battery room. Here the bright brass disks of a big electric battery glisten under a great glass case and hanging from the walls of the room are all sorts of queer apparatus for driving the lazy blood into new life, and giving the flesh and all it implies a gentle fillip to remind it that it is forgetting its functions. This is where you get 'points' and have your hair combed by electricity till you present the appearance of a very fretful procupine." [The Boston Globe, 1887] Adams' will also gave considerable amounts of money to other philanthropic Boston institutions, including The North End Mission, The Boston Young Women's Christian Association, The Female Orphan Asylum, the Temporary Home for The Destitute, and the SPCA. PLUS: "JFA Songbook" (see below). Overall, the material is very clean, having been stored in a filing cabinet, free from light and handling for forty years. PLUS: five newspaper skateboard mags (1977-1980), newsprint (folded for many years and toned). PLUS: two surfer mags (1973-1974), newsprint (toned). A FINE AND EARLY ARCHIVE OF SKATE PUNK FLYERS, DOCUMENTING THE ROLE OF THE BAND JODY FOSTER'S ARMY (JFA) AND THEIR CONTEMPORARIES IN THE SKATE CULTURE IN THE EARLY 1980s. SEVERAL FLYERS ARE ICONIC AND ARE NOW UNFINDABLE IN FRESH, MUSEUM QUALITY AS HERE, HAVING BEEN STORED IN A FILING CABINET FOR EXACTLY FORTY YEARS, TO WHICH IS ADDED A SMALL QUANTITY OF NEWSPRINT SKATEBOARD MAGS (1977-1980) AND RELATED EPHEMERA. Two cultural phenomena of the 1970s and 80s continue to exert a tremendous impact on the youth of twenty-first century: skateboarding (particularly skate-punk) and hip-hop, both of which began as expressions of disaffected "outsiders" who were unwilling or unable to participate in mainstream America, and did so in a completely DYI manner. Today, both phenomena have been co-opted and commercialized worldwide, particularly in terms of music, linguistics, fashion, art and culture. We are able to offer a small but very interesting "time capsule" of the former. Concerning skate-punk band JFA: "With roots in the Arizona and Southern California skateboard scenes, JFA was formed in 1981, nineteen days after the failed attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan by John Hinckley Jr., an obsessed fan of Jodie Foster. The original lineup of vocalist Brian Brannon, guitarist Don "Redondo" Pendleton, bassist Michael Cornelius, and drummer Mike 'Bam-Bam' Sversvold developed a faster, more focused sound that combined the nascent hardcore of Black Flag and The Germs with the twangy guitar that defined The Ventures and Dick Dale. With lyrics and imagery steeped in the lifestyle, JFA appealed to skaters who saw themselves taking surf culture to the streets." Rare 1778-1852 French Cadastral & Urban Planning Archive: The Boulu-Trottier Estates Description: A highly cohesive, 6-page manuscript archive charting a complete geographic and historical link between rural aristocratic estates (Ancien Régime) and mid-19th-century speculative urban capitalism. The collection records how the Boulu family's ancestral holdings in the Nièvre region of Burgundy were managed, mapped, and eventually structurally leveraged alongside their prime urban real estate ventures in central Paris. Included in the file are 43 images, including (1) 26 photographs, all 8 x 10 inches, from the R. Farthing Studio in Peterborough, each identified in the negative, mounted on linen, and stamped on the verso by the studio and the association, (2) 9 photographs, also 8 x 10 inches, from the Roy Studio in Peterborough, all images of hunters and fishermen with their kills and catches and with the association stamp on the verso, (3) 2 photographs, each 5 x 7 inches, picturing deer, and (4) 6 photographs, each 5 x 4 inches, picturing roads leading to Peterborough and Loon Lake. The photographs were once bound together in an album, but are now loose; a gilt stamped leather label, 2 7/8 x 4 inches, used on the album cover and reading "Kawartha Lakes / Association / Peterborough, Canada," is included with the collection. The first group includes two photographs of the "Loon Lake Fishing and Hunting Club," six of the proposed golf course at Kawartha Beach, Loon Lake, six of Loon Lake's Glen Cove Beach, including images of a cabin and a hand pump, six presenting views of Loon Lake, three with a cottage or lodge, and six others, including views of Apsley, Apsley Pass, and the "Devil's Throat" on Eels Creek. The nine hunting and fishing themed photographs include views of large deer kills, a bear being transported out of the woods, large catches of trout and smallmouth bass, and a hunting party on a lake in their canoes. These 35 photographs are mounted on linen and stamped on verso "Kawartha Lakes Association." Six of the remaining photographs are affixed in pairs to the verso of one of the larger ones, the other two are blindstamped "Roy Studio." A near wilderness in the 1920s as reflected in this group of promotional photographs, the area is now well populated and dedicated to its outdoor features, as reflected in this current statement from a local realtors' association Web site: "The Kawartha region is a picturesque area which truly reflects the name it bears, 'Kawartha' an Ojibwa word meaning 'shining waters.' The area comprises over 250 lakes, waterways and rivers, many linked by the scenic Trent-Severn Waterway, all together offering a vast array of recreational choices. We know you'll love the Kawartha Lakes." A very good lot of photographs picturing the 1920s dreams of the development of a wilderness area in southern Ontario for recreation and vacation, especially for golf, hunting, and fishing.
