Un portrait en médaillon au frontispice par Rigaud. Reliure en plein veau brun marbré d'époque. Dos lisse richement orné de fers et roulettes. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge. Coiffe supérieure élimée. mors supérieur légèrement fendu en tête et queue. Coins émoussés. Frontispice jauni. Assez bon exemplaire, frais. Dans une imitation du poème didactique et philosophique de Lucrèce : De natura rerum, hymne à l'épicurisme, la cardinal Melchior de Polignac en donne une réfutation sur le modèle chrétien et cartésien. Le poème fut souvent traduit et connut de multiple éditions, et bien que les prétentions philosophiques du poèmes ne portèrent pas loin, il fut apprécié à sa juste valeur, comme une des meilleures imitations de la poésie latine. Contemporary polished calf with gilded spine Early edition, one year after the first that was published in Paris and edited posthumously by the Abbé de Rothelin. In his Anti-Lucretius the cardinal de Polignac (1661-1741) gives a refutation of Epicureanism and materialism in famously elegant verse. The idea goes back to conversations he had had with Pierre Bayle. - Uncommon London imprint by the English bookseller John Nourse (1705-1780). - Minor browning, bindings somewhat rubbed, hinges weak (not detached but swith cracking), upper spines with small repairs, inside mostly clean.
